    MGS4 too big for Blu-ray?

Last week closed out with news that many a PlayStation 3 gamer was eagerly awaiting to hear: Konami and Kojima Studios will fire off Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots on June 12. In addition to early access to the Metal Gear Online April beta test, the publisher also revealed that those who preorder the game will receive a bevy of extras, including a bonus DVD that includes a prologue that recaps the series' intricate and winding story, a 20th anniversary retrospective, character bios, and trailers for Guns of the Patriots.

While the release date is surely good news, the weekly Kojima Productions Report podcast delivered a bit of an unsavory tidbit for Japanese-language purists living abroad. Responding to a fan's question of whether or not there would be Japanese audio in the North American and European versions of MGS4, assistant producer Ryan Payton said, "Unfortunately, because of disc space, we don't have the space to include the other languages--the other voice-over files--for the respective versions. So the Japanese version won't have English VO, and the NA and Euro versions won't have Japanese VO."

Is it to be produced on Blu Ray or DVD. I didnt really think they were even using Blu Ray for games yet.

    How much would that cost?

Seems like the HYPE machine is in full swing. Come on! Pulease! A 50+gig game? Thats retarded.

They have been using Blu ray for all ps3 games
Blue ray is 25gig so double layer is 50g.
i would be impressed if the game takes 25gig

Hmmm, seems I read somewhere the other day that there was only one game on the PS3 that uses a blu ray disc. How do you know they are all blu ray and not DVD's? I dont really know anything about them actually but its seems very silly to put most games out on the VERY costly blu ray disc's when most any game would fit on one DVD or at the most 2 dual layer DVD's. Do you really think any game could not be out under 16 gigs if it contained no HD video? I dont know about you but I don't care to watch a movie during a video game and thats all they could be filling a blu ray disc up with, HD video. BLuH!

Sorry to get on my soap box. It revolves around another pet peeve of mine, bad compression but I won't pull this thread any further off topic.

Well all I know is my copy of GTA4 says Blueray on the disc, that leads me to believe it is indeed on blue ray...
Other games had blue ray on the case, however, I only own the one game, so I can not verify what is printed on the discs.

To my knowledge games are being produced on bluray discs. However due to the slow read times, many companies have resorted to creating multiple copies of the same file on the disc to increase the read speeds. It would not surprise me if this tactic was used for metal gear solid.

As for the reason games take up so much space. Some of it is probably due to using less compression on videos, audio and textures. As well as the use of higher quality audio, video and textures. The improvement over simply compressing the content is probably negligible for most people, but I'm sure purist would be able to notice a slight difference.

MGS4 is using completely uncompressed 7.1 audio. Thats got to take up a shit-ton of space. I only know one PS3 owner personally, and even his nice sound system isn't going to make him gripe about "poor" audio quality.
Here's Britney Spears' private jet... The gulf stream 3 doesn't even have a remote control for its surround sound DVD system. Still think downloading music for free isn't a big deal?

I've heard MGS4 is going to have more dialogue than its predecessors (if you played those you'd know there was lots). The soundtrack is supposed to be quite extensive. My best guess would be its all in lossless quality, and that might take up a huge chunk of data, but 50gb is huge. I'm also willing to bet the game will be of a longer length, since its the final installment in the series and there the plot and subplots will all need closed in some manner. I think the quality takes a lot of space but i hope that the game will be a lot longer than the previous ones. like the mgs2 was beatable in 5 hours.
