    Mysterious torrent downloading problem

    Hey guys,

A little background info: I have been using Azureus to download torrents successfully for years now. I have a high speed ADSL connection (Bell Sympatico Canada) through a Linksys router. I am using Windows SP2. Until recently, I have always gotten excellent download speeds (about 300kB/s) on the 'downloading' computer. I used to set the upload limit at 65kB/s (which was almost always used up completely by the client). Fortunately for me, I did'nt have to do any router/client configuration to get these results (all the stars lined up I guess!).

However, things took a turn for the worse when I got greedy and decided to download torrents on another computer on the home network. At first, I was'nt getting the same speeds on the new conmputer as I used to get on the other 'downloading' computer (NAT problems). All guides on the net pointed to playing with port forwarding on the router to solve the problem, which I proceeded to do.

Now here is the bad part, after doing so, I now get terrible download speeds (~30kB/s) on both computers. Even though my upload limit is still set at 65kB/s, the client seldom uses all of it (~25kB/s) like it used to.

Right now I am just focusing on getting the original 'downloading' computer to download like it used to. I read through Malicious Intents' guide on this site as well as others online but I seem to have a mysterious probem that is hard to diagnose using information the aforementioned guides. I set the incoming port to 16881 in Azureus. I also setup port forwarding of ports 16000-17000 (TCP, UDP) on the router.

Here is the wierd part: there appears to be no NAT problems (green light), and there appears to be a lot of R and L connections. I even added Azureus and port 16881 to the exceptions in Windows firewall all to no avail (I don't have any other firewall). It is definitely not a seeds issue as I am currently downloading a torrent with over 7000 seeds and 17000 peers (I am connected to 89 seeds and 69 peers), and still not downloading a byte over 30kB/s.

Have any of you guys encountered a problem like this? I would greatly appreciate if any of you guys could diagnose the problem for me. I will gladly provide any other info if you need it. Thanks. Hope I did'nt bore you with this long 'essay' of a problem!

Hmmm. I would naturally ask if you are sure the torrent you are downloading is not a fake... there are a few too many peers there... Check your client to see if there are any hashfails, and wasted megs of download... that may be a reason....

Also if you are downloading off both PCs remember that they will share the bandwidth. so if you have 3MB connection, your maximum speed for ANY traffic will be around 300kb/sec. So if you have two browsers open, the pcs are conencted through the router, you have your AV software updating itself, two clients open each with a few torrents running, then that is what you can expect. I had the same setup, and late at night when I was the only one downloading, I would get 300 MAYBE 400 kb/sec, but then in the morning when the other PC got switched on and started with its seeding I would be luky to see 30-40kb/sec. Though it has to be said each PC had at least 4 torrents reunning simultaneously, both seeding and leaching....

also it may just be that your ISP has begun to throttle you. Search for them with keyword throttle in google or wikipedia and see what comes up.

MOST impotantly check and double check your router nat config. The first time I started messing with that stuff, it was real easy to do, but there were quite a few steps involved and I always had to go back and do the one I had forgotten. The Azureus wiki us just about the most comprehensive guide to Port forwarding. Also go to http://www.utorrent.com/testport.php?port= and enter your listening port for the PC which you are on after the = ... That will tell you if your port is forwarded properly or not. Do it a couple times to make sure you get a consistent result....

Um... that's about all I can think of mate, good luck!
