    new mac user

ive just purchased a mac and was looking into different bt clients... i went ahead and downloaded transmission but my torrents are only downloading at like 5 kb/s... when i had my pc i used utorrent and they would download at around 50 kb/s on avg.. im on the same network as i was with my pc and there are no other systems on this network.. i did however have some who knew alot more about this sort of thing go into my utorrent settings and change some things to make it go faster... i should say im not as intelligible as most of you are with these sorts of things so if someone could please help me config my transmission settings or do w/e i have to do to boost my download speed that would be much appreciated.

Did you setup the port that client uses to match the one that was set in uTorrent? If you did already, did you check to make sure you have the same IP? Since its a new computer, if you have a router, your IP will most likely be different, and you'll need to change where that port is pointed to on the router, from your pc's IP to your mac's IP.
If this makes no sense, let me know, lol.

Transmission (nowadays) should be fairly competitive with uTorrent, so I would say there is a setting that is misconfigured. Research more on how to forward ports and make sure Transmission is using the correct port.

uhhhh, i havent changed nething from the default settings... like i said i dont know much about this kinda stuff. i had a friend run me through the steps on port forwarding but when i got to my routers config pane there was no port forward option... the other thing that confuses me is im plugged straight into my modem, but it still shows that i have a router ip...
also i dont know the settings that where on my utorrent.. i know im not giving you much to go on here, but like i said im kinda new to all this, and none of it really makes sense

On my router, the port forwarding is kinda misleading, its all called "services", I have to setup a service, tell it the port save it, the go to another tab to add that service to point to whatever IP. Your fastest help would be to get your buddy to drop back by, otherwise, check your routers manufactures website for the maual on how to forward ports.

It sounds like your modem is also a router. It shouldn't be any harder to configure, though. Check http://portforward.com/ to see if it is listed on there.

    Open Transmission.
    Go to Preferences >> Network.
Check the notification next to 'Incoming TCP Port'.

If you get a green dot and 'Port is Open' then you have successfully port forwarded!
If you get a red dot and the message 'Port is Stealth' or 'Port is Closed' then you haven't forwarded correctly.
    It's from transmission's support page
