Slow dl speed

I know you have heard this before, but my download speeds are horrible. (most of them start at dl time: 1 week and then it will jump back an forth from 1-3 days) The icon on the bottom/middle of the screen has gone from yellow to red and back to yellow several times. I have tried to forward ports but all the ones I use come back as not open. I'm not sure what else to try. Any ideas?

I am running BitTorrent 6.0 (build 4747) No patch that Im aware of, I just redownloaded it the other day. Windows Vista. RoadRunner ISP. Netgear WGR614v7 router.

Ditch BitTorrent for utorrent (lighter on sys resources), forward your ports (google for portforward.something), then hack them (TorrentFreak , fifth step).

Once I re-did the port forwarding with Utorrent my speeds boosted between 80-100 kb/s, now Im back down to 30-40 kb/s still with the red icon. I took a look at the webpage about the patch but I dont see why it would be benificial for me to download a patch from 2006.(I would think that my window system is up to date already)

I am still getting a port not open error when I check it.

I did a speed test just for fun so I can see where I stand.

It could be that you are not forwarding ports correctly... Look up for a step-by-step guide on how to forward ports for your concrete router or any similar. I make a note here: it's very important that the port you are using is not blacklisted. Check this list out http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers and make sure you choose a port which is unassigned or just pick up whichever you want from 49152 to 65534 (these are dynamic ports that can't be "registered". I totally recommend using one of these ports.)

I don't know about BitTorrent client... but I'd recommend using Azureus.

I also noticed your torrents have very few seeds. Try downloading something with more seeds... and watch out for the tracker status.


Try this and tell us the results :icon_thum . By the way, you should get a higher upload speed. :icon_comp

I used the guide on portforward guide from portfoward.com. I'll check to see if my port blacklisted.(I dont think your link worked for me to look at the list) Im not using BitTorrent this time. HelenaP already got me to switch to UTorrent. Also the image I posted is from the BitTorrent website.(it was an example)

HelenaP-what patch should I be downloading and will it make that much difference? I have the latest version of windows.

Any other ideas? This is getting frustrating. Like I said, I had speeds up to 100Kb/s right after I did the port forward but its still declining and the port still says its not open.

IP 72.20.34.145 is your public IP. In order to port forward you must use your local IP (192.168.1.136 in your particular case).

The patch works regardless of the date. The page I linked you to:

"How to Port Forward?

It's not too horribly difficult, but the procedure varies greatly depending on the router. But there are some things that should remain the same.

What you need:
1. Your internal IP address.
2. Access to router configuration page.
3. The port you are using in your torrent program.
4. Patience :)

Where to find these things?
1. Internal IP.
My favorite way is as follows:
a) Press start>run
b) Type "cmd" (without quotes) into the box and hit enter.
c) Into this window type "ipconfig" (without quotes) and hit enter.

2. Access router configuration page.
a) You first need the router's address. You can find this in the output above, under "Default Gateway."
b) Open your web browser (firefox, internet explorer), and put that address into the address bar (the area that says www.google.com when you are at www.google.com).
c) This should bring you to your router configuration page. If it doesn't... Consult the documentation that comes with your router.
d) Now you will probably be at a screen or prompt asking for a username and password to access the router. If you don't have one, just press ok. If you do have one, then hopefully you know it, or we're not going to be getting any farther :)

3. The correct port.
Where to find this varies a lot by what program you use. in utorrent you access:
options>preferences>connection, and look where it says "listening port"
In bitcomet:
options>preferences, look under "listening port"
In azureus:
tools>options>connection, and look at the listen ports.

Now this port should ideally be in the range of 50000-60000. If your router doesn't like to go that high, then go here:
http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers
And pick a port from one of the higher ranges listed as "unassigned"

Put this number into your client, and remember it.

4. Patience is up to you :)

Now comes the part where the patience you have will be tested. The way to do the next part varies between every router. You need to explore your router till you find somewhere that it mentions forwarding, or something. There will be places to create "rules." You will be able to specify an IP address (your internal one), a port, and tcp or udp (you may have to make 2 rules to forward both kinds.).
