    Downloads grind to a halt!

    Lo all,

ive never really had problems with downloading until now, i know that speeds shouldnt be a problem but whenever i try dl'ing the most popular dl's (they shold be very fast) im aslways sat at 0kbs!

now these are the latest and best out at the moment and if im luky there is - 1 - other person out there! what the hell is going on? has uk traffic stopped or something?

even all my currents dl have completley stopped!where there were literelay hundreds have now vanished!

has something happened in the uk im not aware of?

Also my pc resets about every hour or less with programs like bitcomet and utorrent open.

any reson for this? i get the blue screen of death constantly

    (runnin XP)

Well, you basically have two issues here, the DL issue and the bluescreen/restarting issue. For both, we're going to need some more info.

    Tracker(s)?
Number of seeders/leechers? (no file names please)
    ISP?
    Bandwith? (www.speedtest.net)

Computer specs? (brand, model, year, speed, amount of memory)
XP service pack 1 or 2?
How long has the bluescreen/restarting issue been occurring?
How long has it been since you've done a clean re-install of windows?

    ok thanks for reply.

Trackers = im sorry i have never understood what a tracker is...
    Seeders/Leechers = 271/3885 and 161/3207 added a week ago.
    ISP = Blueyonder (UK)
    Bandwith = 3955 kbps / 362 kbps

My pc i built myself, gigbayte mobo, AMD 64 Dualcore, 4800+, 2gb ram, 700gb
My laptop which also crashes as much is a Dell, TL60, 2gb ram, 160gb
    Both xp sp2
Both the blue screen has started weirdly at the same time, bout a week ago, its come to the point wheres it just a joke, i open utorrent on my pc 5 minutes it WILL crash, laptop bout 15 mins.

laptop is new (1 month) and pc i reinstalled windows about 6 months ago.

Im sorry to go on but the restarting is happeneing so frequently now its unbelievable!

Has no one else had this prob!?!?!?

Are you behind a new router or a new firewall? If so, try setting the programs as "acceptable" for the firewall and try forwarding your ports. Make sure you check the firewall settings to see if you may have accidentally set the program as "do not allow connection to internet".

    Hope this helps!

A tracker is basically a server that acts as a switchboard, connecting you to other peers. When you download a .torrent file, the file contains the link to the tracker(s). When you load the link into utorrent, utorrent contacts the tracker(s) and it/they attempt to find you seeders and leechers.

    thepiratebay
    mininova
    snarfit
    btmon

    These are public trackers.

When you are running a torrent in utorrent, the general tab on the bottom of the screen has a section dedicated to tracker information. It lists the url(s), tracker status, update information as well as DHT status. Many public trackers list multi-url (multi tracker) torrents. If you have more than one url, they will flash, one after the other in the url section.

Make friends with the tracker section of the general tab. The status area is vital. When you get those nasty red arrows telling you that there's a problem, the status area tells you what the problem is. Nine times out of ten the tracker is down (offline).

Click on a torrent that has a red arrow, read the message in the tracker status area and post it here. We can help you decipher what's going on. Remember, if you have more than one url, there will be multiple status messages cycling one after the other. If this is the case, give us all the status that don't come up as 'working' and the tracker url each is associated with.

Here's my next question. Did you do anything special about a week ago? Can you recall installing anything about that time? When did you install the new firewalls? Did anything special happen in general? Did a storm occur?

Other than that, here are my suggestions

    1. Get rid of bitcomet- it's garbage and most private trackers won't allow it.
    2. Get rid of peer guardian- anti-p2p groups have methods for circumventing it (such as anonymizing services) making it worthless
    3. Uninstall utorrent 1.7.5 and install 1.6.1. Utorrent was bought out by interests with ties to the MPAA right around the time 1.6.1 came out. Versions beyond that are suspect.
    4. If you are DLing from public trackers, either stop and join some private trackers or choose your public trackers more wisely. Anti-p2p groups attack public trackers by doing things like uploading faulty versions of movies and uploading incomplete versions that never finish. They go to great lengths to mess with the public filesharing community. If you have to use public trackers, The Pirate Bay seems a little more immune to attacks than other trackers.

None of these will solve your problem necessarily, but they are good practices to follow.

Im very good at keeping spyware/viruses and everything at bay, got the lastest and greatest software, but when i try to test to see if my ports have been forwarded correctly, (if it doesnt crash by the time i reach it) nothing ever happens, utorrent just takes me to some wierd site that basically never loads.

*Forgot to mention, i am with blueyonder who is now virgin media
**If i install this older version of utorrent, will it find my current downloads and pickup from where they left off, when i installed utorrent from dumping bitcommet it didnt do that so all my near completed downloads were lost forever!

when ever laptop and computer reset i get this error message on both machines:

    DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

Apparently this means i have a memory problem but this happens on both mahines and only when using Utorrent 1.7.5
