Extracting multiple zip or rar files
So this may be a dumb question but I can not figure out a way to do it. Lets say I have a directory called files and inside of that I have 30 subdirectories. Inside each subdirectory there may be anywhere from 2-10 zip files. Is there a program that will allow me to start at the files directory and unzip each zip file into their current directory without having to go into each individual directory?
I know with winrar I an select x amount of zip files and then unzip them right there but I want to be able to do it from the root folder.
I've been looking for this functionality as well.
Some of these uploaders can get WAY too rar-happy.
Winrar does have one helpful function, though. You can set the shell configuration so that you can select all the archives in a folder, right click, choose 'extract each archive to a separate folder' and it will extract everything to that folder without having to worry about where the files are being extracted to or having all the files end up in one folder. When you have a folder with a mess of archives (50+), this helps.
It doesn't work for subdirectories, though.
Winrar should be able to, with a single press of a button, search through a directory and all it's subdirectories, find all the archives, extract them and, if an option is selected, replace the archives with the extracted versions- converting all the archives to regular folders. In fact, given enough time, you should be able to click on your c drive and have it convert every archive on your hard drive to a regular file. It should also be able to make multiple passes in case there are archives within archives.

Its freeware, and it does exactly what you want here.

Sorry, you didn't say it had to work in Vista. I use XP, it works fine for me.
I do use it, A LOT.
Speed is ok, nothing amazing, it unzips each file at about the same rate winrar does, sequentially.
So I guess if you wanted to do your whole C drive, you'd best walk away from your pc for a while.

Cool, thanks, I'm on XP so I'll give it a shot.
But can you use it to select the root folder even if there are no zip files in that folder just other folders? Or do you have to use it to select a folder which actually contains the zip files?
It'll dig down into subfolders if you select that option in the config.
I've never actually tried to, but you should be able to point it to even a drive and it will extract every archive on it, each into its own folder or the directory the archive currently resides in, depending on how you set it up.

ues winrar and right click on any of the multiple file and click extract...
What I do is, right click the folder( in your case the folder "files") and use windows search funktion and search for ".zip" or ".rar" when you have the list of files mark all of them right click and press "extract here" that should do the job :icon_chee
GENIUS! Now why didn't I think of that? Seriously that solved my problem in 2 seconds.

I know what you mean. Sometimes the solution is alot easier than expected :D.
I can see where that would be a lot easier than right clicking a folder and selecting unziplify.
