Whats with this connection i'm hearing about called "Microwave"?

ok. I was on bearshare during set up and it said under the high speed tab the connection "microwave". Lol. This sounds kinda odd. What is it and how fast is it so I can run a network cable to my Microwave to my pc :devil

microwave is a wireless internet connection.... it takes a couple different forms.

    1) a wireless lan/local network using high frequencies (usually 2.4 ghz) to send data.

    2) an isp will send out basiclly the same thing, but under a much higher power, and then you (the microwave internet user) have an antenna that receives very high frequency radio waves (microwaves) and connect it to your pc.

i dont really know much about the speed, but i would assume its close to that of 802.11B speeds.... somewhere around 11megabits per second.

We've got wireless internet access out here in my neck of the woods, and it's got nowhere close to 11Mb/sec. speeds. . . maybe for the entire local network, but individual user speeds average around 800k, and that's when the weather is clear.

Others tell me that the service isn't good, and that it's quite unstable. Plus, you are required to have clear line of sight to the antenna in order to connect, which is only a 7-8 mile radius (if your lucky).

I would only use it if I had no options other than dial-up. . . luckily, 1.5Mb cable is available here!

note that i said "mb" or "megabit", not "MB" pr "megabyte" a bit is 1/8 of a byte, so if your speaking in bytes, then it isnt really that far off.

Around my neck of the woods we've got a wireless internet service that runs 1.5 mb/sec up and down for $50 a month, but they must not have been doing to well, last I saw they'd started offering a new service of 256k up and down for $34.95 or something, anyway it uses a small square antenna that you're supposed to put in your window, and you're supposed to have line-of-site to one of their antennas, which they place on cell towers usually. Some people in fringe areas, or with trees etc., mount the things on poles outdoors.

it would be great to have a wireless connection go in the "1000's of gigs per second"... unfortunately for most, besides the sheer cost, no computer manufacturer comes standard with a gigabit ethernet card, except apple...

    apple rules
    windows sucks
    we have os x
    and u have wimpy xp
    deal with it

and since it's "thousands", even the gigabit ethernet wouldn't be able to catch all this.

so, it looks like 'dealie' is just an idiot trying to show off.

sorry, but the plug has been pulled.

but, for long range wireless, that must be nice. i want it.

hes an idiot because he uses an OS that supports more than 90 percent of software in existance? and yours only supports less than 10? hmm....

and he is not wrong when he says that the wireless connections that are used by cell phone companies can transfer 1000s of gigs/ sec.... cell phones use alot of bandwidth... even when the person isnt calling.... they still send and recieve data... then you gotta figure that many of them are being used for web browsing, that takes ALOT of BW. think of the load on those anntennas in NYC. 10 million peeps.

also, if apple rules, then why is the mac os so unpopular (atleast compared to widows) ? dont get me wrong, i like apples, but they dont serve my needs.

ok, im not saying that there is not a network capable of HANDLING thousand's of gigs per second, i am saying no computer is capable of handling it. wouldn't thousands of gigs be considered terabit ethernet? i don't even think that fiber optics at short distances can handle that. yes, cell fones NETWORKS can handle thousands of gigs, but a SINGLE COMPUTER can not take advantage of all that bandwidth.

    and btw:

"hes an idiot because he uses an OS that supports more than 90 percent of software in existance? and yours only supports less than 10? hmm.... "

haha, yea, and that 90% is filled with crap... stuff nobody uses... stuff filled with adware, nagware, spyware, etc. these terms are only existent (sp?) bc of windows. i'll take the 10% that includes:

    microsoft office v.X
    iChat
    Rendezvous
    Mail
and many of the games windows has, thanks to macsoft, etc.

anyday over all the bullshit i have found with windows.

    ...

"also, if apple rules, then why is the mac os so unpopular (atleast compared to widows) ? dont get me wrong, i like apples, but they dont serve my needs."

apple controls approximately 5% of the computer userbase. please go to http://northblue.digitalrice.com/jou....html#85347865

i hope i did the url correct, the first time i've ever put a link in a post...

and also, you can thank apple for not bringing any copy protection like windows does...
for having one of the first mass-produced dvd-r drives (dvd-r, dvd-rw, dvd+r... i dunno, one of them)...
    for itunes
    for iphoto,
and all the other things that apple has done.

and for p2p, bc this IS zeropaid...

a simple program called "acquisition"... free, TOTALLY, no ads... the fastest p2p client i have seen, ever. and the 'prettiest' one too.

    "Whos the idiot?

    Mister apple man.

Excuse me while i go bust a gut laughing. :)"

yea, i hope your laughing... if im the idiot, and you dont like apple, why is tim dorr's osxp visual style (on themexp.org) the second most popular theme?

    hmm, i wonder...

let me go laugh now, at you.

I thought the topic at hand was Microwave connection, not how much Isus's love for Apple computers measures up to. (Although I have to agree, what is the point of getting a Mac when you can do everything it can do on a Windows PC plus more.)

Whoa i think someone is taking those "switch" ads a little too seriously.

No offense but apples are alot more expensive, their is less upgrade options because they use propietry hardware, and no offense but looks arent everything.

If you like it then great but im sticking to my PC and out of the computer pc/mac cock measuring contest going on here which has not much to do with this thread...

im goin with seph... everybody get back to the microwave thing, i only mentioned appl ein the first place because the powermac g4 comes with gigabit ethernet out of the box.

no, this isn't about a switch ad tho, i have enjoyed apple since system 7...

and i use the same argument about apples bc everybody loves mac for a reason. they are better-looking, the most stable os, etc.

    but this is MY opinion.

i fight my friend about this online all the time, and nobody ever wins. i can get my stuff done faster on a mac, and you can get yours done faster on a winbox. period.

krell, i dont give a fuck about you. shut up. kiss my ass. thank you.
