    Exclamation I'm Joining the Army

    Some of u probably recall my previous inclination to rejoin the military after my girl cheated on me a while back, well her and i have broken up for good, removing my last reason for not reenlisting.

    I submitted my package about 3 weeks ago and am still waiting for the magical thumbs up or down, but nonetheless have decided to join the Army.

    Yes, the Army.

    Am trying to go combat infantry believe it or not, though Combat Medic may still be in the cards depending on whether or not I'd have to do hospital duty.

    Bottom line? Am trying to ease the burden on our troops that we all hear so much about. Irregardless of your position on the war or our long term strategy for the region, the fact is that we have people pulling 15mos deployments due to a lack of manpower and I think it's only fair that I lend a hand.

    Now, my friends all think I'm crazy, but my physical fitness level is way more than adequate (200 pushups, 100 situps, 20 pullups, and a 2 mile run each day coupled with 2hrs bodyboarding to cool down). I also get to retain my old rank, which is apparently a corporal, but would be sergeant soon enough.

    Will update you all as I find out more about what's going on. Sept 30th is my target date so we'll see.

    Anyways, take care all...................soulxtc (Jared Alan Moya)

    Sincerely hope you do okay because that's some of the worst reasoning I've ever seen.

    Do they complete a psychological profile before you're allowed to join?

    Jared, I might get slapped for this, but I am doing it anyway. Please consider the following before you commit-

    IF

    "...If you can make one heap of all your winnings
    And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
    And lose, and start again at your beginnings
    And never breath a word about your loss;
    If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
    To serve your turn long after they are gone....

    If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
    Or walk with kings- nor lose the common touch;
    If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
    ...!"

    ~Rudyard Kipling

    olololo.........thx ya "Prick." Have felt guilty for a while now that people are making a daily sacrifice in our name and that I haven't been able to contribute nor lend a hand in sharing the burden.

    I've been having some doubts as of late, but I was reminded tonight how many before me have made the sacrifice in serving our country even though it wasn't convenient or practical.

    Shit I joined when I was 17, and granted now 32 seems like it should be an age whereby I could look back and say "I did my time," but that does little to ease the burden on our troops deployed abroad.

    The bottom line is that our military needs people, and to continue writing it off as somebody else's problem is something I no longer have an excuse to do.

    Well, the point is; Even though you mention re-enlisting for the most honorable reason, the very first thing you mentioned was the ex-girlfriend.

    I just felt it was food for thought in looking to all your qualities and not letting the woman be perhaps the main underlying emotion guiding your thoughts to do it.

    By no means was I implying you're not a man, just that you DO seem to have all of the qualities listed in Rudyard's poem...that's all.

    Bah! I will edit (done, I left the pertinent lines)
    I analyze too much.

    Well, the only role the ex played is that I was never able to join when we were together. She in fact cried the last time I even broached the subject.

    THX for saying that I have the qualities described in Kipling's poem, though Im not sure it's altogether justified, but thank you nonetheless.

    It's purely my desire to lend a hand that guides my decision.

    Jared,

    You are certainly picking an interesting time to join the Army. I've read that if you show up for duty within a few days after signing, you can collect an extra $20K bonus. Don't miss out on that! As a taxpayer, I know a tiny fraction of that will come out of my near empty wallet, but as a concerned citizen, I'd rather see people who are outspoken in their ACTIVE support of our Armed Forces get a little extra pay. I may not be gung ho about the war in Iraq, but I do believe that providing a strong national defense is one of the very few things the Federal government is obligated to (and should) do, according to the U.S. Constitution.

    If you do end up in Iraq, I wish you the best of luck. I'm a tad too old to sign up, or I would, seeing as how my employment level is currently low. *snicker* Have you thought about a specialty yet? I'd suggest trying to get into sniper school...reach out and touch somebody.

    Jared - I wish you the best of luck. I can relate to you 100%. I am ex Army myself and immediately following 9/11 was ready to reinlist. For those of you who have not been in the service I really think you can not understand where he is coming from. I see these young soldiers everyday on TV and I want to be over there with them. It is part of that camaraderie that most civilians will never understand.

    I'm sure the girlfriend is not the real reason that he is going back in but just the one that puts it over the top because that was the only thing left holding him here.

    Jared - like I said after 9/11 I went down to my local reserve unit (who I know would deploy) and was ready to sign that day. I had just gone over my initial 8 year enlistment so I couldn't just sign on the dotted line. I had to go back and take the ASVAB test again and then I could sign up. Well it gave me sometime to think about it and take a look at my life. I chose not go back active duty because I know had a family and we both had good jobs so I looked at the reserves. I knew the unit I would join would get deployed (and have been 3 times since then), I talked with my then fiance (now wife) about it and I chose not to join back. At this point in my life (34) it just didn't make sense. Do I regret it? Sure, somedays. I really do miss the Army and I would love to be over there fighting and hopefully now leading some of the young troops.

    The only advice that I do have for you is to take a look at what type of job you are going back in as. 11B may not be the best route. Not so much because it is Infantry and you may be on the front, but you need to think about what you want to do when you get out. The medical field is booming and if that is something you have an interest in you should go after it. Also unlike when I was in 10-15 years ago there are tons of computer related jobs. Just don't be blinded by today keep your eyes open for 3,5,10 years from now. If you really want to just be in the mix of things sign up as a Military Police. They are probably the most deployed MOS.

    Again good luck to you, be safe, and HOOAH!:icon_salu

    Hmm, MPs? Not really concerned about acquiring a skill. Have plenty. :) Though is definitely good advice that Ive said to a few of my buddies who I convinced to join. Already did 5 years prior as a Navy Medic, dont really want to go down that route again.

    There are other options.

    Ha, Helena thinks she's the only one that remembers any poetry.

    Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
    Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
    Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
    And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
    Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
    But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
    Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
    Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind.

    Gas! Gas! Quick, boys! – An ecstasy of fumbling,
    Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
    But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,
    And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime . . .
    Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light,
    As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
    In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
    He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

    If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
    Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
    And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
    His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;
    If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
    Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
    Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
    Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,
    My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
    To children ardent for some desperate glory,
    The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est
    Pro patria mori.
