Hi, I've been considering setting up port fowarding on my computer, but I have one reservation about it. You have to set up a static IP address. Now, couldn't this compromise my anynomity(sp?) on the internet? Is there an easy way to turn port fowarding on and off?
Static IP addresses for port forward have nothing to do with anonymity.
One very confusing aspect of port forwarding is the dual meaning of the term 'static IP address.' There's two types of IP adresses. The first is the address that your ISP assigns you/what the rest of the world sees you as (www.ipchicken.com). This can be static or dynamic. The second is the address of each machine on your local network. The outside world never sees this- it is only utilized by your router for forwarding information to the correct computer. When you set up a static ip for port forwarding, you're dealing with the latter.
The best analogy I can think of is, rather than owning 4 computers on a router, you own 4 gated community houses on a street that has yet to be named. The town has a name, as does the country (ISP provided public IP address), but the street isn't defined. The bigger picture has been defined, but the smaller picture is up to you. You need to define the street name and give your house a number or you won't get mail.
As far as the outside world goes, they're not communicating with you directly, they're addressing information to your router. Your router is forwarding the message to each machine it's connected to.
If you want to see what your static IP address is go to Run>cmd>ipconfig
To set a constant Static IP go to your TCP configuration.
Make sure it's within the DHCP limit of your router.
Check out www.portforward.com it has most routers.
You should deffinetly be opening your ports, most private trackers make you
