All about RATIO at Demonoid. Lets Discuss !

Hi, Friends,
One of the most frequent questions from new members of THE
Demonoid is about RATIO. Who, What, When, Where, Which ... whole lot about RATIO. So instead of replying to each and every query about ratio time and again, I am going to attempt to bisect and then trisect all there is to about RATIO here, today, Right Now.
Ratio and its working is even an enigma ( lol ) even to some pros , and look here , me a demon underling essentially, dares to start a journey of enlightenment . Hoping against hope that there remains a shred of possibility of addressing the above mentioned dilemma. LOL.
Anyways, I will get started in the very paragraph. Sit tight, and keep your eyes glued right here. Comments on this much awaited ( ahem! ) article is much appreciated.

Demonoid.com is a Private Bittorent tracker, meaning you need to register at their site before you can use their services. And amongst all private trackers, Demonoid is THE most lenient and the easiest to get registered. Remember one just cannot go ahead and become a member there. A person needs to have an invite code before he or she can register oneself as a member. And only an existing member , who has been a member for at least 3 weeks can generate an invite code.

I called Demonoid lenient amongst all private tracker. Here I explain why I said what I did. All private trackers keep a tab on the amount you downloaded and uploaded via their tracker. They track it, hence the name “tracker”. So Original !
Our enigmatic entity RATIO is the ratio of the Uploaded data to Downloaded data . In general private trackers ban their members who have poor ratio, say 0.31 OR 0.22 . Why you ask? Simply because they believe in the philosophy that one must at least attempt to share what one has downloaded. And a poor ratio is SO not a testimonial to that attempt. Hence the impromptu BAN.

But our Good old Demonoid, is a very lenient fellow, it believes in sharing alright but also believes it to be purely voluntary. Hence Demonoid is not STRICT about a member’s Ratio. They do not BAN a member for simply having a poor one. But there are certain pitfalls to having a bad ratio. I will cover them later.

Most ( almost all ) private Bittorent trackers keep track of Ratio of a member by a system implementing PASS Key. A Pass Key is a unique string of characters which is distinct for each member of that tracker. Whenever a member downloads a torrent from the tracker, the passkey is put in the torrent. Now whenever the member downloads ( or Uploads ) using that torrent, the tracker can easily identify all the data transaction done by the member. Because the tracker monitors the passkeys of all the active torrents and passkeys being unique , are easily associated with a member! Thus keeping track of data transaction for the particular member. This method has a downside to it, when the number of members get too large ( say above 20,000 ) the load on the tracker gets too high for it to maintain a track of all those active torrents with passkeys! This is also the reason why most private trackers keep the number of their members limited to 15000 or so.
Well , our Demonoid, has members in Millions! Just imagine , the resource Demonoid would need to track all its members had it used a passkey system ! Duh! So it stands to reason they do not use it!
Demonoid uses a totally different approach. When a member logs in to Demonoid, it assigns the IP of the member to his account. And download upload done from that particular account is credited to this member’s statistics. All Clients , meaning softwares one use to download the data files using torrents, report the current IP to a particular tracker.
Now cometh the interesting part , it is often seen that ratio at demonoid doesn’t update the right way it should . And even it updates, its way too late, not as fast as other private trackers, which almost reflects the change in statistics immediately. Here is why.
Demonoid updates the statistics of members once a day. And the time is approximately 5:00 GMT. So generally change in statistics can be observed once a day after 5:00 GMT . And any activity later will not be reflected till the next day.
Demonoid’s tracker will not acknowledge a change in a member’s statistics unless it receives a ‘event=stopped’ message from the client reporting to the tracker. Meaning, once everyday the member has to stop all individual torrents he/she is downloading/uploading from Demonoid. Only then will Demonoid register the change. In the event that your client quit unexpectedly, even if it had been running for more than 6 – 7 hours , Demonoid will not acknowledge any change!
And then, there is the issue with people using broadband connection which use Dynamic IP. With dynamic connection one’s IP changes every time one disconnects and connect to the internet. So suppose you login to Demonoid and download a torrent. And now you disconnect thinking that you will download it later ! So next time when you connect to internet and start downloading from Demonoid , you have promptly forgotten that your IP has changed ! So whatever download or upload you are doing , Demonoid is unable to associate the IP now being reported by your client. So all data transactions now you will be doing, Demonoid will give it a miss.

People with Static IP don’t have this problem. But still quite a few time their Ratio refuse to update.
Well I am going to give you an almost foolproof method of making sure your ratio updates at Demonoid.
Here goes the mighty knowledge.

• 1.Clear all cookies in your browser and logout of demonoid. Restart browser
• 2.Login to Demonoid and browse their torrent section for about 2 to 3 minutes
• 3.Download the torrent , and open it in µtorrent. Continue downloading it and later seeding it.
• 4.Every 6 hour stop each of the torrents from Demonoidat least once. And if there are more than 1 torrent from Demonoid in use, stop 1 at a time and at an interval of 1 minute.
• 5.If you download torrent for lesser time, stop the torrents one by one at a shorter interval.
• 6.Restart them one by one, should you need to continue downloading or uploading.

Just make sure you stop them at the mentioned interval at the very least.

The above procedure work for me like a charm. Updates reflected every day! But
BUT, those who are on a Dynamic IP and saves the torrent using a different IP and want to download using a different IP, what for them ? Solution is there yet !

Mostly it will be helpful for people who use some kind of scheduler to go online at a certain time and start the downloads. For them invariable the IP will be changed and Demonoid as usual will not acknowledge transaction of data from that IP.
So for them , here is the fix, but the client required would be Azureus. µTorrent is not suitable for the method

• 1.Step is same
• 2.Step is same
• 3.Visit www.ipchicken.com and note down your current IP address.
• 4.Open Azureus, get to Options>Pereferences ( or hit Ctrl + , )
• 5.Left hand pane, go to Trackers, expand it by clicking on it, go to Client.
• 6.Right hand side you will find ‘Override Options’, put in the IP address you noted in the box ( rectangular ) beside ‘Override Tracker announce IP(s)’ .
• 7.Must click on Save on the left bottom corner.
• 8.Now your client will always announce the same IP ( the one you just put ) to the trackers from which you are uploading or downloading torrent.
• 9.Do not further login to Demonoidusing new IPs ( i.e after you disconnect and reconnect again )
• 10.Now you can leave Azureus on with these torrents running, disconnect and go away, keeping your scheduler ON , so that it connect to the internet at the set time. When you connect to the internet Azureus will start downloading, and will tell Demonoid’s tracker the Override IP and not the newer dynamically assigned one!
• 11.Every 6 hour stop each of the torrents from Demonoid at least once. And if there are more than 1 torrent from Demonoid in use, stop 1 at a time and at an interval of 1 minute.
• 12.If you download torrent for lesser time, stop the torrents one by one at a shorter interval.
• 13.Restart them one by one, should you need to continue downloading or uploading. Just make sure you stop them at the mentioned interval at the very least.

So now you are set. Check every day after 5:30 or 6:00 GMT , you should see the ratio change nice and easy.

That’s how mine work every time!

Pitfalls of having a bad ratio :

Well duh, not much at Demonoid at least. For once, if you need something at Demonoid , you go and request at their forum. If you have poor ratio , beware, you will most probably be kicked hard for requesting when you yourself do not share much. And having a good ratio ensures you are regarded warmly at the forums and with lots of respects. Next is when you want invitations from other private trackers. You want the invite from some guy, and you need to convince the person of your good seeding habits. Otherwise there is no way that guy is going to invite you. With a poor ratio at Demonoid , how can you do that ? Right ? So having a good ratio pays here too.

People can obviously do without either of the above, then you should not be bothered about Ratios at all. Just let it be. If this doesn’t satisfy your quench, then I suggest you log in to Demonoid’s forum and Browse the topic mentioned “Ratio” , link being www.snipurl.com/Dratiohelp .

*Note 1
Use of scheduler is Optional in the Dynamic IP part , it holds true even if u just connect disconnect and again reconnect to continue downloading. I use scheduler, hence my perspective.

I have a question about Demonoid's level of privacy, as I'm taking steps to keep my ip away from from prying eyes while DLing. One of the things I like about private trackers is that John Q. Anti-P2P can't just click on a link and see who you are and what you're doing. They can seek out invites and wait for sign-ups, but it's not as easy as spying on a public tracker.

Demonoid allows the public access to new torrents (1 per week I believe). I also see demonoids trackers listed in torrents in public sites such as isohunt. It only makes sense that the public access new torrents can see all the private members, but if someone clicks on an old torrent (via isohunt) can they access private member ips as well?

My ratio does not update correctly there for some reason. I used to but now it don't. I tried all the things posted. Works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. I think it's because the enormous amount of traffic, but who knows.

It does partially update, so I'm thinking that's it. This is not an issue with internal/external torrents.

And make no mistake. I am not some n00b

Demonoid is a good site, but I find its hit and miss with speeds. Private sites are way faster, but the selection for lets say music and music videos can't compare to Demonoid or open trackers like btjunkie.

umm ratio at demonoid is worthless, leechers galore. i use it for stuff i dont want to waste my hard earned real private tracker ration on. its so easy to cheat on demonoid, they dont have any scripts to detect it. beleive me, i tried just to see if the claim was true. i did an outrageous test of 1 gb almost instantly, like 100 mbs a second fake, and it wnt through, and gave me the 1 gb. lol they seriously need to fix that...

demonoid is a good resource, if you are struggling for a ratio and this applies to most sites, donate 5 10 bucks and you'll get it bumped up. i spend that much on a drink when i go out...

i really do love demonoid but i too have problems with the ratios :s im thinking just support the site, drop 5$ and get my ratio back to 1:1

Yes they can see all the members IP's even on an older torrent. This is what DHT does, even if you aren't supposed to have access, DHT allows you to grab the list of peers from anyone else that has it enabled (its enabled by default on demonoid, doh!). This is why demonoid (and public trackers) are sooooo very dangerous, they let their torrent files get uploaded everywhere (public search engines) and ANYONE can download them and grab your IP if your seeding/leeching there.

Remember, peerguardian only protects against KNOWN anti-p2p people.
How hard is it to go find a new ISP, or just to get a new IP from your current one? Anti-p2p people can do that too, think about it.
Wake up and protect yourselves before its too late people.
