Question Slow speeds on Ares with port 48017

Hi i was hoping that someone could recommend a port range for Ares that is not choked by our ever caring Internet Providers...cough....

I am currently running VISTA and using Ares as my default P2P client.

I have configured my Belkin 4 port wireless router and set up a static IP address and forwarded port 48017 which i currently use for Ares.

I have also been connected to ADSL2+ for about a month now and i feel im getting choked.
Reason is that when i download anything from non p2p networks i get speeds in excess of 300 KB/s. Then when i download from Ares it never goes past 40 - 80 KB/s. Although it has reached about 170KB/s and then backed off to around 40-80KB/s.... I am using the Vista firewall with exceptions for Ares.

Any recommendations or advice is much appreciated in combating this problem.:icon_scra

Unless you have a burning desire to stick with Ares, I would recommend you move to either uTorrent or Azureus for all your torrent downloads. If your ISP is throttling your bittorrent traffic, one of those will definitely help speed things up. I've provided a link that should help you encrypt your traffic. http://torrentfreak.com/how-to-encry...rrent-traffic/

As far as p2p downloads go, I can't imagine getting speeds much higher than what you listed. P2P is inherently slower than bittorrent because of the way the file is downloaded. I would only use it as a last resort if you can't find the files you need on a torrent site. I haven't used p2p in years so this information might be out of date but the torrent stuff should help immensely. Hopefully that helps.

    Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply. Around a day after my post i did stop using Ares and moved across to BitComet. Man what a difference it made. I now get speeds around 150 KB/s peeking at 375 KB/s being the highest. I did try your link, it took me to the website but the page didn't open. Very interested in reading about the traffic encryption so if you could please forward me the link again would be much appreciated. http://torrentfreak.com/how-to-encry...rrent-traffic/

    Thanks again for your help
