Hey guys,
I was wondering whether or not I should get Windows Vista in the near future, it seems like there aren't many applications that support it at the moment and I'm just generally hesitant when it comes to purchasing operating systems.
I would love to hear your opinions.
i think the question you need to ask yourself about Vista is what will it do for you that XP cant do. At this time, i think there are two games that wont run on XP just because "they" made it that way on purpose. im certain that Vista will be fine to upgrade to eventually, but i have never been as against upgrading from another OS as i have been from XP>Vista.
I have been using vista since the week it came out and have rarely had a problem with a program i wanted not working BUT i can honestly say that there is NO reason to upgrade (IMO).
Pros:
My favorite part of vista is the way it goes to sleep and hibernates and has a "shutdown-esque" mode that stores the session to disk. This is very handy for me on my laptop and also very quick startup times (but not worth the money to upgrade).
Another feature I like is the ability to ad extra system memory by adding and external flash drive, very handy to have the extra memory when running photoshop and lightroom at the same time.
Downside:
These two features are the only real benefits I have found using vista. Right now I would recommend staying with XP especially if you are buying a legitimate copy of the OS. It doesn't seem like there would be but I found a real learning curb when i started using vista that almost made me switch back to XP. This learning curb and my dislike for the new windows explorer are two cons big enough for me to recommend holding out until you actually buy a computer with vista already on it. It is a beautiful and elegant OS but once you see thought the surface you see that it was a waste of money to buy.
Now this is all just my opinion, keep that in mind, i only recommend holding out because i am assuming you are fairly good with XP and more than a basic user (email and internet, i assume that of all members of this board). I do recommend the upgrade to all my friends who are not very computer savvy who will only notice a real change in graphics (and therefore will love the upgrade), however, anyone who is good with computers should probably wait till vista is more forced on them.
My two cents, I hope I helped :icon_thum
Thanks a bunch guys! That really helped.
So I'm probably not going to buy Vista anytime soon and hopefully when I do (which I will eventually) it will be a solid OS which will last for another couple of years, just like XP.
Once again, thanks!
I had vista ultimate for a few months till i just had enough of the compatability issues and i went back to trust XP. ill wait a few more months before i put vista back
I will not switch until I absolutely have to....which should be awhile.
One of the games which was supposedly only going to be able to run on Vista, Shadowrun, was cracked by the warez group razor1911. Not only can you play it on XP now, but the game performance is actually higher on XP than on Vista. And also, Shadowrun loads faster on XP than on Vista. It only took overwriting a few files in the install folder. That's one more reason not to switch to Vista.
It is a "pretty" OS, though. You have to give MS that. It's very "pretty".
Yeah that's right, pretty sure Halo 2 is going to get cracked soon (I remember seeing somewhere that a legitimate company is working on a Halo 2 XP patch).
Not that I would change to Vista just to play Halo 2...
Apparently the Microsoft's release cycle is going to be much faster for their next operating system, 2 years I think. Right now there aren't any good reasons to even think about using Vista, DirectX 10 is a flop so far (http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3029), Aero doesn't do anything a few programs for XP can't do, and its performance is far below that of XP. At the very least I would wait until Vista Service Pack 1 comes out.
I don't know because I use Windows 2000 pro
I'm still running 2000 as well. Had XP for a little while but, until it becomes a necessity, I won't upgrade. Having found a MS product that actually works the way it should most of the time, I am loathe to give it up.
I used 98SE until about 5 months ago. I fought upgrading until I had no other choice. From everything I'm hearing about Vista, I'll probably do the same thing with XP SP2.
M$ has always put out new software that's been buggy/unstable, and, over the course of time, gotten their act together and fixed it. Vista is no exception.
vista = the devil!
Anyone tried using cracked programs on Vista?
Can U still cracked programs or run a keygem and take "control" of the program, like XP?
Thanks
there are programs that have been cracked for vista but overall Im sticking with xp because there are no compatability issues.
