i've been using ares for awhile now, most of it was on Winxp... now i just got a new laptop with windows vista home premium on it...
i have put the ares program in the exception list on my winxp firewall but still no luck on the program connecting to the p2p network
am i missing something here? does window defender stop programs from accessing the net? i do have norton internet security running but have disabled both its firewall and windows just to see if ares would work
also i'm not too sure about the ares compatibility with vista but i downloaded the laters version... 2.0.9
i haven't tried any other p2p prog... i'll try limewire lateron
norton internet security is very picky. go into the settings and see if you can make an exception for ares
I use Norton 360 + Vista and don't personally have any problems connecting to Vista.
My current setup stats (like anyone cares...):
ASUS A8N32-SLI Motherboard
AMD 4400+ Dual-Core CPU
Windows Vista (Ultimate 32bit)
2 GB (2x1GB) Corsair XMS RAM
2x250 GB (in RAID 0) HDDs
EVGA GeForce 7950 GTX 512 MB
Creative X-FI Fatal1ty XtremeGamer
Also sporting a black MacBook
Revision/Release 1
Upgraded to 2GB RAM.
Your problem probably lies in using two firewalls- You stated "put the ares program in the exception list on my winxp firewall" and also "i do have norton internet security running." Any time you have Nortons running it causes p2P problems. I used Nortons with win98 and XP, but they changed the core about 3 years ago so I dumped it for CA. In Vista Windows firewall (believe it or not) is better than Norton's. I would keep the NAV but loose the Norton's firewall. Vista works great with P2P- better than XP worked. Who knows, maybe it is a plot by Microsoft to take over the Entertainment Cartels.
windows firewall only monitors incomming connections, so your correct in looking for a more robust solution, unfortunately you chose norton, which we wont go into here.
as far as Vista running P2P better then XP? thats debateable...
please give this a read Vista is spying on you
for any ares related issues while you are on ares, i have ran an ares help room for 5 years now, there are many regulars who will gladly help if im not in the room.

1) close down ares make sure it isnt still running icon next to clock
2) open control panel firewall.......inable firewall
3) open ares windows firewall will pop up ...block .... or unblock click unblock
4) ares will now connect
5) close ares completle
6) open control panel windows firewall disable
7) open ares and it will connect again........
NOTE ....so even with windows firewall turned off it will block ares only after you activate windows firewall just to unblock ares then you can disabel it again

have u tried utorrent yet?
vista is soooo buggy..
You are right on the money, i created a user name just to tell everyone who this is frustrating the hell out of like it has me for a very long time, i just turned off the norton fire wall, and i turned off the automatic connect, and just do it manually everytime. i dont know if that makes a difference but i use windows vista and ares regular works perfectly fine for me now, so to all looking for this ares vista and after u find it u then have to worry about the registration fee and all that other bs, ares galaxy(2.1.1.3035)(the free version) works perfectly fine on vista. so thanks for the advise
why would anyone use Norton's in the first place?:15:
