TriMark announces it will scan newsgroups and general websites for serial numbers and if discovered the original registered purchaser will be held liable.

Just when you thought Newsgroups were the last remaining file-sharing safe haven on the planet, along comes a company called TriMark to spoil all the "fun" and remind users that caution is always prudent no matter what method of file-sharing you use.

Though don't panic too much just yet, it only applies to files with a "...mark that
transcends all forms of copying," i.e. serial numbers and data

Now that would totally suck Usenet is great for apps someone needs to infect TriMark with a nasty virus and crash their system before they have a chance to implement the plan I say Hackers Unite you have a target!!!

The plan as described will do virtually nothing. Most files carry no digital watermark of any kind, and if they do the person who upp'd them is stupid in the first place.

This will not catch anyone but an idiot who uploads a watermarked file bought digitally. No cd's or dvd's have encoded into them any personally identiying watermark.

How could they?

I could just as easily have grabbed the other one on the shelf.

Do they plan to have all of the movie and record stores ask for your personal information so that it can be uploaded to a central database? I think not.

This news story is amazingly sensationalized considering the lack of any real content on the website for the company. Vaporware?

Even if not, it's pointless. It will have virtually no effect on the community as a whole. Not much could. The only thing that would have a great effect on usenet at this point in it's development would be for all of the isp's to shut their newsservers down, and even then you still have the incredible pay services.

Usenet is here to stay, in one form or another. It was here long before p2p, it will continue long after.

I still go to usenet for the latest movie and trance releases. Much faster and convenient than torrents. Although they don't always have what i'm looking for, then i'll turn to torrents.
