External USB hard drive connected to tv/receiver

So i recently purchased a 500 gig external drive that i was hoping would connect to my DVD player that has an USB port, but as it turns out the DVD player doesn't support video playback as i thought it did.

So I would like to know if anyone here has a similar setup where the DVD receiver is used as a gateway to the USB HD and what the product is.

    Thanks

I would suggest getting one of these http://cgi.ebay.com/3-5-PORTABLE-A-V...QQcmdZViewItem

Its cheap if you have a spare HD laying around. Im dont think I will buy this model as it doesnt list what comes with it, mainly the remote. Have to have a remote!

Im actually buying one next week and installing a 250Gig hard drive. I'll let you know how that goes.

I've never heard of doing video playback with an external hard drive before. I always thought those USB ports were for photos only (which I also thought was kinda dumb, because who wants to just sit around looking at photos on their TV screen.

I'm going to have to look more into that A/V HDD video thing... that looks really cool.

hmm.. doesn't sound possible to do by just plugging in.. because you'd have to have some way of navigating the hard drive and it would be formatted for a windows platform.. but.. best of luck

    lol

My dvd player CAN nav the HD, but can't play the video files. It appears that it can't play all video formats.

The formats it can't play via the USB

    DivX, ASF, WMV, MPEG, etc...

It can play the formats via a disk but not via the HD
