Another installment of the BitTorrent weekend guide to what movies, music, TV shows, games, and more are out there and available for download using the BitTorrent.file-sharing network.
It's been a while since my last article covering new and popular content for download with BitTorrent, and being that tomorrow is the day that NFL Conference Championship games are on, I figured I get a jump start on reviving this series.
In addition, I think rather than just list a measly "top 10" or "25" chart, as was the case previously, that I'd also give a rundown on what I've come across and seen myself.
I'm also going to narrow my focus to movies alone, for the music charts always seem so bloated and inaccurate, and as for games----well, I'm sure people look elsewhere for their "hot" game title lists.
When it comes to movie content, there's a lot of cool new stuff out there right now, the most notable is all the new HD-DVD format content that has finally made it's grand appearance on BitTorrent.
The first HD-DVD movie to appear on BitTorrent was "Serenity" but, an uploader to The Pirate Bay quickly upped the ante to include "Pitch Black," "Batman Begins," and "The Chronicles of Riddick" as well. However, as I mentioned before, with file sizes ranging from 21.37GB, 24.76GB, and 24.94GB respectively, you better have a solid connection speed if you hope to ever finish downloading them in the year 2007.
As far as "regular-sized" content goes (cough, XVID), the Oscar season is still upon us and DVD screeners abound.
The ones that I would recommend personally, that are actually worth seeing (I'm still ill from seeing Babel), are listed as follows and are listed in no particular order.
MY TOP 10:
1. "Unknown": Awesome plot, awesome acting, awesome dialogue, awesome, awesome, awesome. Did I already say the movie's awesome?
2. "Jackass Number Two": Hilarious. Nothing is more funny than a guy who dresses up his "manhood" as a sock puppet in order to tease a menacing snake. Johnny Knox's "little red rocket" stunt will have you leaping from your seat.
3. "Apocalypto": Mel may be nuts but, the movie's pretty darn good. It has awesome scenery and special effects, and the subtitles will keep you from realizing that the Mayan dialogue sucks. Best reason to see it? Movies with jungle temples always rock, and nothing says action more than a face-eating panther and copious amounts of human sacrifice.
4. "Blood Diamond": Was actually pretty good. Had heard bad things about it but, it was another movie, aside from "The Departed," where I wasn't waiting for him to jump up on a railing and shout lame dialogue.
5. "The Departed": It has Jack Nicholson in it, enough said.
6. "The Good Shepherd": Not bad, pretty slow at times though. I made the mistake of watching it at 10pm movie theater showing and vowed revenge for having been duped by the trailer. Yet, all in all, it's worth watching at home.
7. "The Pursuit of Happyness": Will Smith hasn't been in something watchable since "Men in Black(?)" I think, and this movie is no exception. If you're with a girl though, and she wants to watch something that doesn't have special-effects or car chase scenes, then maybe, just maybe this is the one you want to pick.
8. "Borat": Funniest movie I've seen since Jackass Number Two. Sacha Baron Cohen makes a trip across the pond and leaves audiences rolling in the aisles. If you haven't seen it already, check it out pronto! I swear you won't be disappointed.
9. "Dreamgirls": A movie to be watched with a chick for sure but, Eddie Murphy and Jamie Fox have roles that are worth watching and make the movie a nice pick that you and her and can both sit through without you wanting to hang yourself in the middle of.
10: "Rocky Balboa": Surprisingly good, though a better description is maybe surprisingly not bad. The script is actually methodical and doesn't play into the pitfalls of foolishness or bloated acting. Was actually able to sit in my seat the whole time and watch it. Not bad at all.
**HONORABLE MENTION**
"Pans Labyrinth": Guillermo del Toro, the Mexican director from Guadalajara Jalisco, Mexico, and director of Hellyboy and Blade II, paints the story of a young girl who travels with her pregnant mother and new stepfather to live in a rural area in Northern Spain. The girl lives in an imaginary world of her own creation and faces the real world with much chagrin. Post-war Fascist repression is at its height in rural Spain during this time of Franco's rule, and the girl must come to terms with that through a fable of her own. The movie is visually stunning and is described as "...everything M. Night Shyamalan wanted 'Lady in the Water' to be." It's good, real good in fact. It first debuted on BitTorrent back in October but, recent publicity has made many people aware of it that weren't already, myself included.
WATCH the TRAILER....
Well, I hope this lists gives you an idea of some of the cooler movies out there that are worth watching, and help you to pass the time this weekend.
As for those of you who will be watching the football games tomorrow, "Go Colts!," and "Go Saints!"........Chargers R.I.P..... :(
