2007 Internet - Killing me sloooowly.....

Has anyone noticed that net speeds, and net speeds for webpages have radically decreased while the time to wait has increased?

I have always noticed a decrease of net speed around the hollidays (all of that game traffic, and new users getting more machines, ect.) This year the time to wait has increased and I am on a faster connection. Videos are jerky, do not stream well, for example.

The net is slowing down to a crawl. Are they throttling home users? This makes business sense because why would you want any home user to become commercial competition to services that you are commerically providing?

Any thoughts or suggestions helpful. Yes, I am on DSL, but the only cable option is com-unist-cast and I do not want to give them my net connection.

MY thesis is the net is slowing down to a crawl.
Is it not a feat sublime? Intellect hath conquered time.

Nah. I'm on "com-unist-cast" and it screams faster than Mels on his way to a Tarantino premiere.

My speeds are fast also.I am on DSL.

I can't imagine your ISP throttling your speed down so much that you can't open web pages at a decent speed.

Considering what others have said here, it is not the DSL sppeds you should be getting, as they apparently are having no troubles. If I were you, I would give your ISP a call and ask them point blank WHY your speeds are so slow, if that does not help or they do nothing to try to resolve the issue, you may have to switch to another provider if you want faster service.

I understand how you might feel that way. Internet speeds and most servers power have increased 10-15 times in the past 5 years. When you stumble across a shitty or overworked site it seems absurdly slow as you are used to modern speeds. Remember, though 5years ago when the best "broadband" was 1.5 megs and only the sites with money could handle that speed. Bank of America's website (the largest US Bank) took 20 seconds to load the front page alone with either DSL and Cable. Remember Sharereactor or suprnova?

No, I think we've grown more impatient and more accustomed getting what we want when we want it.

I live way up in the mountains and I get 1.5 too but we have 3 coming soon. I feel pretty good about those speeds and I haven't seen any slowdowns ('cept when I use my crappy laptop) since the new year.

I would definitely contact my ISP and find out if they have any local issues causing this. I know our recent blizzards probably created some problems in certain areas so it's possible it is something they are doing to improve but for now...it sucks.

supposedly it has to do with WEB 2.0, ie streaming of video content.....]

The Venice Project for instance DLs 350 MB p/hr and UL 150 MB p/hr.....

I agree with the problem, however I have not tried to forensically investigate it.

My suspicion is the way traffic is routed to DNS servers, or DNS caching problems along the line.

    I keep this site bookmarked - http://www.internetpulse.net/Main.aspx?Period=RH24

Please state your ISPs if you post here reporting slower web page replies.
