some new problems in starting Ants

Hi, every one, I find on ZP window, a greeting saying I didnd't post since a while... thanks anyway, but I had some stuf to handle first, and appart of it, I came recently once or twice, and read some posts, but didn't have any reasonable answer to it... but today, I'd like to ask some help about Ants.

I like the little app and its working principle, and, appart of the fact that its net is still in the process of being built, and so, has little to offer (at least in the type of music I'm only interested for), I like to have it running, and to give access for uploads, to all my shared files.

But, together whith that, I keep using mostly eDonkey for my personnal DL, (and some time also LimeWire, but principally Like Ants, to share my own files, since otherwise, most of the stuf LW proposes is porn)...

So, Ants, after some installing problems, which had been resolved in using the "antsp2p.jnlp" instead of "AntsP2P setup" or even the direct terminal install... after those problems had been resolved, it worked correctly for quite a few weeks...

Unfortunately, at that time, I had to change my ISP which was almost filtering to death all my p2p (except for ants, that I suppose was not detected).... Now, everything then is back to normal, and in proper working conditions, and the donkey is downloading and uploading full blast, without trouble... but I had some adjustments to do, since after some difficulties with p2p, I discovered that new ISP works with a router, and so I had to config it which is new to me.

So, I did that to eD2k, to LimeWire (inspite of it having worked its way already by itself through all firewalls and router), and I config also the router for Ants in the same way: opening the ports 4567 and 4568, like they are entered in the settings (according to the one sugested for OSX... I forgot to say I'm running OS X 10.4.6 and 10.4.8).

But, since its new install with that new ISP, it doesn't connects to anything... It installs perfectly, I am able to enter all data about path to complete, shunks, shared (and now, all the shared files appear on the share window) only one thing doesn't register correctly (it never did !) : the path to the browser (Firefox). It seems to look OK in the settings, but it always says it can't acces to it... But that last problem has always been here, even when Ants was working, UPloading and Downloading correctly.

I've think (I do some time), that maybe something is wrong at the number given for my proper number...
I'm not sure if I have to give my computer number (it seemed to work with the previous ISP), the IPV6 one, starting with fe80:0000 etc... but when ants finds it by itself, the groups of four zeros are resumed to only one zero for each group, and if I try to correct it, it refuses it.
I've also try the routers number, and my IP, but Ants refuses it... I also read in the FAQs that one shouldn't use any number like 192.168.... etc...

Appart of that, I did recently a little discovery:
in running LimeWire, there is the indication that LW has detected a firewall. Of course LW works OK since it can find it's way through any firewall, but THERE SHOULDN'T BE ANY FIRE WALL detected ! (previously, when the proper holes were digged through the FireWall, it indicated "LW has not detected a FireWall")
I opened the proper entries in MAC's FireWall ports, and have disabled permanently my router's firewall, since mine is certainly more performing... I've verified that peer guardian is completely off, and that not only net barrier is off, but also its part called antivandal, wich can work invisibly... I'm not running any antivirus (only from time to time before sending something to a friend running windows), so that shouldn't either be a problem...

I've tried to run Ants from any of my two OS, and the result is similar in both cases... So, I'd be very grateful if someone had piece of missed datum, an Idea or a tip... thanks in advance.

Well I'd do better to put quickly an answer to my post of yesterday, before somebody excruciate hes brain trying to find a solution...
I've found now what was the matter with Ants... I thought that, having updated my PC, everything would be updated with it, and in particular java, since its an integral part of Mac's technology... but, looking in despair to possible reasons of those problems, I investigated java in the utilities, and true enough, only 1.4.2 was installed...
So I went back to apple and updated it to 1.5.0... and why, Ants started with no problem...
I thought of simply deleting my post of yesterday, but after all, maybe it's better to leave it with the solution... maybe someone will find himself one day in the same hole!!!...

So, I'm at it again!... Ants worked very well for quite some time, and then, I put it off to give a hand to the ant's milk-brother Kerjodando... and impossible then to start Kerj for days... finally, it did it, and went like bats out of hell... but, after few days and a reboot, impossible to have it work again... Ants didn't work either then... nothing has been changed in my config... but it goes on and on, saying : "wait, ants is connecting"... but it never does connect! :icon_scra ... there is certainely not very many things to download with ants at the moment anyway, but it stll is a small net, and I definitely want to help it growing (in giving some of my band and OS)... being seemingly the only real hope of futur P2P... I even tried with my second OS, but with same result...
What could be the matter ?

    OS X 10.4.8 (and 10.4.6)
    java last update (5)
    Mac firewall permission for 4567 & 4568
    same with router
    ISP's FireWall off
permission for ants to go anywhere on the net in LittleSnitch
    no AV
    PeerGuardian removed
    NetBarrier off.

    Thanks for suggestions

Ants p2p problem Mac and Linux

You need to try the new version of ANts p2p available form either here:

    http://antsp2p.sourceforge.net/ or http://www.dargens.com/ (web version)

Sometimes ANts has issues with JWS (Java web start).

If this is the case report back here with error message and screen print.

gen2007/mag2008…l'acqua ha eseguito sotto i ponti

    Hi,
and thanks for the answer, but aren't you the creator of Ants ? gosh ! :icon_salu

That post anyway is rather oldish (January 2007), and I must say that I did evolved a bit since then… first of all, I managed to have Ants working correcty on my mac, and I did have it staying on rather regularly, I must say, not really to load very much up or down, but more to help the thing to develop its size, since at the moment, it seems to be very limited as a choice, due to the small size of the net.

Of course been a concert solo violinist doesn't help, since my only interested is in classical music and also in French movies and I bett that's a small percentage of the whole public taste… so, to find what I like (and that I don't have already!!) it has to be in a big Net (there is big choices with Pando)

But I must say that I hanged on to Ants by pure admiration for the principle: there had been few years earlier a trial with something working on a similar principle (but that died before to be born), called Kast, and so I really rejoiced seing that someone had started again on that way…

So, I really followed up the development of it… with its ups and its downs… for instance, for some reason, about 5 or 6 months ago, the newer version couldn'd be started on my osx anymore, but since a few months it's OK again…

I will anyway follow your advise, and update my version, I must confess that since quite a while I had my interest somewhere else, Trying some other secure P2P like Pando, Freenet, or trying to have Stealthnet working on mac, also I2P with Azureus, but I'll make an effort to be present again on Ants…
    Cheers
