how to determine version of Windows

I know which version I'm running on *my* computer (grossly speaking): XP.
But sometimes I have relatives or friends who ask for my help
    (especially over the phone)
and I don't even know which version of Windoze they're running,
so it's hard to know what to expect on their computer,
or how to interpret what happens, etc.

Is there something (or a small number of things) one can (tell someone to) do
to determine which version of Windows is running on a given computer?

hit windows key + pause break. that brings up system properties. It will display the OS there.

Or if they can't find the windows key, you can go to start / run and type winver

    Ah! Good stuff!
Silly of me, not to have *guessed* that <Windows>/<Pause/Break>
would have produced this information for me. :-P
    I never heard of WINVER before, either;
the output of that doesn't even *look* familiar.
Anyway, thank you, both of you for these quick and very useful answers.

Yet another way is to right-click on My Computer and choose Properties

    Thanks to you too, Tic3.
That method I really *should* have known.
Well, that will help me to remember it,
and now I now two other ways as well,
Surely *one* of them will stick. <O_o>
