New UK weapon fires 340 GRENADES per minute!

Gotta love the brits.....this new bad boy shoots almost 6 grenades every second....

Rapid-fire grenade launcher will be a welcome Christmas present for Royal Marines in Afghanistan
    15 Nov 06

A potent new battlefield weapon will soon be on its way to British troops in Afghanistan.
Packing a punch: New grenade launcher is put through its paces [Picture: FOCUS]. Opens in a new window.

The Automatic Lightweight Grenade Launcher recently made its thunderous debut during a Combined Arms Firepower and Manoeuvre Demonstration on Salisbury Plain.

In front of a diverse audience, including students from the Staff College and civilians invited along to see how the Army goes to work, a Weapons Mount Installation Kit (Wimik) Land Rover fitted with the new launcher roared through the mud in front of the stand and fired grenades down the range at a mocked-up advancing enemy force.

Job done, the Wimik roared off again to take up position on a sidetrack to be admired by a group of specialist defence journalists and television cameramen.

Colonel Alec Bain explained the role of the new weapon:

"Firstly let me say that the guys who have trained with the kit are absolutely chuffed with it. Traditionally we have used the vehicle- mounted 0.5 inch heavy machine gun to tie down the enemy and allow our people to move freely about the battlefield, but this weapon will increase our ability to do that."

Mounted on Wimik (weapons mount installation kit) Land Rovers or ground-based tripods, the Heckler & Koch grenade machine gun (GMG), which weighs 30kg, is a formidable weapon against infantry and light armour. Key characteristics are:

    * Rate of fire is up to 340 rounds per minute, usually in bursts of three to five rounds
    * Effective over a range of 1.5 kms for point targets, or two kms for area cover
    * Ammunition is 40mm high velocity and high explosive grenades. 40mm "flash bang" grenades can be fired for training purposes
    * Wimiks equipped with the weapon carry 10 ammunition boxes, each packed with 32 rounds

Yeah, I get it. Weapons bad. Still...350 grenades a minute. Admit it. Wouldn't that be fun to play with. I almost want to move to Britain, and enlist.

now the only thing i'm wondering is does the united states have the same capability? and if the answer is no then what is GW going to do about it? I would think that the us is always leading the pack when it comes to stuff like this but i guess not anymore. besides the fact i must agree that it sounds like fun to play with one of these weapons!.

Well, its not so cut and dry, we have access to their weapons development programs as they do with ours plus they actually own a number of defense contractors here in the US. We make plenty of good stuff as do the Brits.

lately though it seems like whats the point, we bring an advanced weapons system on line only to have people whine and cry that we shouldn't use it, thats it'd be "inhumane"

can u imagine if we used one of these bastards against terrorists? you'd have war crimes trials left and right.

    Stinger.

... and Rumsfeld sold most of those to Hussein in the 80's.

Anyway, I'm morally opposed to wars of choice and profit, but I do like the toys. I know it's not fashionable.. but when the aliens get here to turn us into pets you're all gonna be glad the human race has had a lot of practice blowing the shit out of shit.

Rumsled? pppfffttt.......wrong....Stingers were never sold, or given to Iraq that I know of.....the only ones we ever gave out were to Osama and his anti-Ruskie buddies to even the playing field against the Russian attack helicopters and their "wolfpack" tactics.....

probably seemed right at the time but, man does it sure look stupid in hindsight.....

Pfffft all day, dude. it won't change history, other than "what you know of".

I know it's tempting to get your lessons from Rambo III, but I dunno... I prefer books... made of paper and such, with words and junk.

This wasn't covered in Hollywood or right wing moron talk radio, but there was war between Iran and Iraq lasting from 1980-1988, in which the US government supported the latter, espousing the "enemy of my enemy is my friend" doctrine. Oh, yeah.. and along with those missiles, mustard gas and other nerve agents were provided to Iraq. In addition to Iranian (and argueably US ie "gulf war syndrome") troops, they were used against the Kurdish folk in the north. This wasn't a big problem, as it detered Turkey from invading that region to put down those upety nationalistic Kurds, which would have complicated the main conflict with Iran.

In hindsight I don't think it seems stupid to have provided Stingers to the Muja Hadin in Afghanistan. The stupid part was pulling all support after the Soviets retreated, leaving a vacuum of power which brought about the Taliban and... well, I'm sure enough of the rest has been somewhat accurately covered in the mass media. Somewhat.

One should endeavor to dig deeper, however.

PS- dude I don't mean to sound like a dick. I'm just... well... right. That's all.

... and what's a truth sundae without a cherry on top??? here ya go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDABe8AOuCQ&eurl=

I wouldn't mind taking a spin through Parliament with this bad boy. Maybe cruise Downing street and White Hall and off to the Sherlock Holmes Pub to tip a Pint.

More weapons to kill more innocent civilians. There's no stopping when it comes to halting environmental damage.

My job was to fire a Stinger in the Army.

The only missile I shot was with the ladies.

Canada somehow got saddled with the heavy lifting in Afghanistan south also, so we get lots of battle footage on the news. There was one where the soldiers were all taking positions behind this stone wall looking into this field where the taliban were dug in. A situation like that would be a good place to have one of those grenade burpers.

I guess it might be tough if they had one too, but we could call in air support, which I think they did anyway, but the grenade thing would save some jet fuel, and make for some great video.
