It could be you have software or even hardware problems, without telling us more or what you did. We just can't give you good advice!

Try use a reg. cleaner to clean your PC then use a disk defrag. utility to defrag. your hard drive first! Once you are done, reboot your computer then let us know it did any good or not. Also, if Windows give you any error message(s). Write them down!

Do you have any System Resore Points to roll back to?

    Make a new shortcut

    In it, put either:

WindowsXP has a program called SHUTDOWN.EXE which allows you to easily create icons to shutdown or restart your computer.

To create a shutdown shortcut on the desktop:
    1. Right click on an open area of the desktop
    2. Select New / Shortcut
    3. Enter in " C:\Windows\system32\shutdown.exe -s -t 0 " - no quotes
    4. Press the Next button
    5. For the name, enter in anything you like. I just use SHUTDOWN. Click on the Finish button.

Then right click > properties > change icon.

Sounds like spyware to me and without more info I'd guess its:

    Oin
    Yazzle by Oin
    Purityscan by Oin
    Snowballwars by Oin
    Cowabanga by OIN
or anything similar with Oin in it

but I am not a spyware scanner so if you don't have one get one even two and run them to at least get a starting point on what caused this.

did you install any new software recently or use any keygens? I had a similar problem after using a keygen that was tampered with. I used a restore point to solve the issue.

are u running xp pro ??

if so has anyone else got admin rights on ure computer ??

those buttons and their accociated actions can be dissabled/removed by xp pros group policy program

its fairly simple to rectify if that is the problem

google will help u find info on group policy

Yes, browse to your user profile and place it on the root of the START menu.

    ex: C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Start Menu

It will be at the top, but oh well, at least you HAVE one!

Also, consider just putting it in the Quick Launch Menu, next to the Start Button. If you have selected the proper icon, it will be very easy to spot.

Tsk . . . If you had a copy of the " Mini PE v2K5.09.03Xt " cd, you could boot to it, and handle most anything, at all, including virus. But, im assuming you dont have one. With that CD I scanned FOUR drives at once recently, over a million files.

After you install and update Spybot, be sure to Click on IMMUNIZE the system

Then follow this guide for Advanced Mode. There are a few more things there I need to show you.
    http://antivirus.about.com/od/securitytips/ss/hosts_2.htm

Then be sure that the Spyware Blaster is updated and all protection enabled.

Then run Hijack This. Dont make changes with it yet.

there are plenty of FREE web based scans out there that always have the most updated virus definations

    Handle it.

you are infected with one or more virus spyware and or trojans so do what Krell says and deal with it.

find and get rid of the cause of your problem and the symptoms of your problem can then be corrected.

    Your choices:

    A) Try to correct the problems and resume normal operation

    B) Get out that copy of XP Pro with SP2 and delete the partition, reinstall XP and drivers etc

    C) 1\2 gallon of gasoline is only $1.09

    dont forget the marshmellows
