Thumbs up A little more info & hi Lisa!

Shareaza 1.7: The Most Important P2P Software Release Ever

We are proud to announce Shareaza v1.7 - our most exciting and prominent version yet. With this new version, we hope to make Shareaza a major contender in the P2P arena and a huge part of the Gnutella community. Though we are a small group, we have big ideals and hopes for Gnutella and for the P2P circle. In this version, we will begin to break out of the norm and pioneer with our own visions of Gnutella. You may of heard about our hopes for version 2.0 of Shareaza, well this is our first major step towards that goal - to have the ultimate P2P File sharing client available for anyone.

In this version, we introduce major enhancements. Not only to our client, but to it's backbone network as well. We introduce a fresh new re-designed Gnutella protocol, an all new re-designed library and a helpful, but not intrusive, Media Player. Among those added features, are many many more which have been requested by our dedicated fans and dreamed up by our development team. We hope that this public beta test will allow you to join us in forming the best Gnutella client available and to allow us to get a better feel to what you want out of a client, not what its developers want.

    Introducing the Gnutella2 Network
Shareaza chose the Gnutella Network because it is the truly the best choice available. We feel that the Gnutella Network ideals – that a network should be open and free, subject to change and enhancements by anyone – are very appropriate for file sharing. The Internet itself is built around the same ideal, that protocols and standards be made and available openly, fueling further innovation and evolution.

However, we have heard loud and clear from our users that the poor performance of the Gnutella1 network has been a major problem. There have even been various case studies done on the performance of the network which outlined legitimate problems with its design. Problems which can't be patched up.

Shareaza 1.7 supports a new protocol along-side the original Gnutella1, which we are calling Gnutella2, or "G2". It is a more open and flexible protocol, designed from the ground up to support current and future technologies more easily. We think it is very important not to lose the positive ideals and goals that are associated with the Gnutella name, which is why we keep it intact.

The first big feature we have implemented with Gnutella2 is global searching capabilities. In G1 (old Gnutella), searching the network would only yield a very meager sample of results from neighbouring users. In G2 you can receive results from every other G2 user who is online. Your “horizon” becomes infinite. You also have full control over the progress of the search, so you can decide if and when you've receive enough results. e new search system is also much more efficient, reducing intra-hub (formerly "ultrapeer") bandwidth requirements significantly.

We hope that Gnutella2 will further improve, and will be a suitable replacement for any current P2P network, in fact out performing FastTrack (Kazaa) and other popular networks by offering superior value-added services.

    All New Library
The Shareaza Library has been re-designed from the ground up. We are pioneering a new method of file management, called “Virtual Directories”. This allows you to setup your own folders in Shareaza without actually creating physical folders on your operating system. This allows you to move content into other folders, without touching your physical structure.

In addition, you can now browse your content by type. For example, open up your “My Audio” vDir (or Virtual Directory) and go to “by Artist” and go into your favorite artist’s folder and view all their music. Shareaza has a built in “Organizer” which organizes your library from information about files, called “metadata”. You can also view video files by “Series”. So have all your TV Episodes into one Series folder!

The new library encourages better metadata management which in turn can be used more efficiently on the network, such as searching for audio files by artist. This in turn moves from searching and classifying files by filename, which limits the networks capabilities.

In the future, we see methods for you viewing fellow users library’s in Virtual Directory mode and easily sending a whole directory to another user easily.

    All New Media Player
Though many of our fans are very comfortable using their default media players for their files (such as Winamp), we still have received a lot of requests for a native media player. Because of the high demand, we have added a media player in Shareaza.

In our tests, the Shareaza Media Player uses up less memory and is a lot faster than Windows Media Player.

The Media Player also allows you to preview DivX files while they’re downloading.

The media player gives you also more options than other P2P clients. Such as editing aspect ratios for videos, a sidebar playlist with “random” and “repeat” options and it also works very well with the Shareaza Library – allowing you to open a whole vDir as an auto-playlist in the media player.

    ED2K Link Support
Shareaza and the G2 network now fully support ed2k: links, which can be found all over the place such as at www.sharereactor.com and other P2P portal sites. This opens up a huge database of web links that were previously inaccessible.

    And much much more…

We have gone through many private betas increasing Shareaza’s feature list. Also included, but not mentioned above are:
    * Tiger Tree Hashing: Shareaza is now the first Gnutella client to support TTH. With G2 nodes only.
    * MN4/MD5 Hashing: Shareaza now also hash's all files in MD4 and MD5 (eDonkey Links use MD4, so now has Sharereactor Support etc.)
    * Plug-in Architecture: Plug-in layer has been added, included plug-ins are: Image Thumbnail Generator for Library, Media Player, Download Manager and DivFix preview technology
    * New Home Tab Enhancements: New Sidebar with daily reporting of your downloads, daily upload summary, New Shareaza Logo
    * New Search Tab (Work in Progress): Moved from “Start New Search” to it’s own tab
    * Tooltips Everywhere: Tooltips have been added for all library elements, Neighbour connections, outgoing and incoming transfers
    * Toolbars Everywhere: Bottom toolbars have been added to Download and Upload Transfer panels, Neighbours Panel and Hit Monitor
    * Shareaza Settings Re-Design: The options area has been re-designed for easier management
    * Probably more, but can’t think of them at the moment :)
May you always run with the wind at your back and good friends by your side.

    Damn!!

All this new stuff and no free beer button yet?
    No prob love:gj
This new version sounds pretty awesome.
I'm especially interested in the G2 technology. This is what Gnutella needed.

Sounds good. Would like to actually try it. I don't know though about this:

"in fact out performing FastTrack (Kazaa)"

But hey, if they do achieve that, it would be a major improvement to Gnutella.

Gnutella2 is actually a dead project thats over a year old.. Shareaza is using the same name..

Its just marketing too. All Gnutella2 is a collection of GDF protocol changes like ultrapeers, download meshes(which they call global searching ), GGEP and etc. Even though its just calling something that the majority of other programs have or should have which i dont think bundling them together is bad but I think gnutella needs a little more improvement mainly in how searches are done even though its a different name its all still important in the future of gnutella and users who are using obsolete programs or verisons without them should upgrade..

Remember gnutella is only as good as the software that runs it.

Its not just a marketing tool. Also, its not a collection of all of the gnutella protocol features. It actually is a new network that uses the ideas of some of gnutella features, but in a more efficient way. It also supports the old G1(Gnutella) connections as well.

    Gnutella 2

The Gnutella 2 protocol in Shareaza 1.7.x and onwards is a new structure of the Gnutella protocol.

It has new queries and messages that improve upon the previous version of Gnutella. Global searching is acheived using UDP walking of Ultrapeers (now Hubs).

There are many improvements in the protocol and culminated they deserve the name Gnutella 2.

Shareaza as a program has been wholly improved too. I recommend you check it out, no matter what you currecntly like. The more people use SHareaza, the better the new protocol performs.

Sepiroth: maybe you should find out the facts before you blow your mouth about something. Gnutella 2 is revolutionary, not just a name as it were.

Yeah thats because they want to work the bugs out but the information with the beta isnt a whole lot.. Id at least like to know with a tad bit more depth summary of whats going to be in it and how some parts are going to be done even without the technical parts to stop any rumors from starting.

This really does sound promising to me. As far as I can see, though the premise behind the original Gnutella structure is incredible, the theory has never translated to reality well. If this Gnutella2 is as stable and fast as they are claiming, it will boost Gnutella's strength greatly when/if Fasttrack goes the way of the dinosaurs.

These guys really are trying hard to keep gnutella chugging, and I'm willing to try it out.

I love this program, and the people who make it. This is actually one, of the very few who listen to there users. Since they use this policy, why not make the program open-source? That will make Shareaza even better.
A great man once said, it's better to go forward, cause if you go backwards you may trip, or cause someone to fall.

No I will not fix your computer.

you know you should really give linux a try. you know the funny thing about the l2cache on the old pentium 2 really didnt give me the power to do the multimedia stuff that a guy like me wants to do.
