Video on 4.7GB DVD R+...How Much?

anyone know the max amount of video, in hours, can be held on a 4.7GB DVD R+? The Disc says 2hrs. but I've gone more with no problem, so what is the max? Without losing too much quality where it's noticable.

A CD says 80 minutes of music but I can put 7 albums on 1 disc totalling over 7 hours.

It's all about the format and the encode.

I could put 20 hours on one DVD5 but it would be shite quality.

exactly....xvid encoded would be like 65 flics or 8 hours+, but need a player that will play XVID movies....can get for like 60 bucks at Wal-MArt

"How long" depends on the bit rate and compression. The higher the quality, the less you can fit. Play around with the NeroVision Express2 and add media files of differing kinds, it will either be fun, educational, or excruciating.

Mpeg is a steaming format, and the size of the video encoded and the audio bitrate will determine how long and how much.

It's the same principle with .avi, which is why they are recomending Divx or Xvid etc.

If its fast action and sci fi movie.. 1hr 45min. Thats if its 5.1 channel, DTS audio takes up more space. IF you strip the subs out, it will be 3-8megs less. I can usually encode the menu down a bit, strip the extras and get a good byte rate of a movie thats over 2hrs 30 minutes. Try to stay above the 3000 mark as if you upload it, people be more inclined to download it. I go for DVD REBUILDER which will encode it to how many passes you want which can get the byte rate higher of a film. It looks alot better then dvdshrink.

Now theres a idiot out there that got their hands on Pirates.of.the.caribbean.2.ntsc and decided to use a one click program to copy movie. They left everything, fbi warnings and so on. Now the video byte rate for it is 2422. Now i think the movie is over 2 hours and 30 minutes. Quality has to suck.
