Hello,
First of all, for all the jerks who will tell me to look up other posts, I have and they did not help. Anyways, my problem is that my computer resets itself automatically and randomly, making it very hard to get large files and share them. My computer only does this when I am running WinMX. I don't run other programs and I always use a secondary connection.
Also, when my computer restarts, the graphics are all screwed up when it comes back around and I always have to reset them.
If anybody has had a similar problem or has a plausible solution, it would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the above first comment, but some people in this room are very condescending when replying and there is no reason for that.
Thank You
well.... uhh... im going to have to refer you to a certain post made by me about 23 days ago, in the kazaa thread. lol.... just kiddin.
what do u mean by "reset"? does it restart? if its restarting, then it could possibly be that your power supply is not big enough. depending on what u have for drives and cards, etc. this can be a big issue. id say minimum, having a HDD, cd drive, and a P4 or athlon xp, you should have ATLEAST 350 watt. im not an expert, but if you got a bigger computer, or multiple drives, multiple optical drives, or a high end chip/gfx card, you should have a 450 or higher.
whew.... after all that im hoping that you meant restart.....
Thanks for the replies guys.
I have a 4 year old pentium 2-450. I have a Voodoo graphics card, a CD Burner, and I'm running Win 98. I tried reloading WinMX a couple of times to no avail. I don't wish to get a new computer, so if there are any other suggestions for working with my computer, I would appreciate it.
Also, I will be reloading the program again to see if it helps this time. Will report back any findings.
Thanks Again
p.s. By the way, I did mean restart. You were correct in the assumption.
Krell, what drivers do I need to reinstall. Are you saying ALL my drivers, or what?
Will await your response, Thanks!
He's saying....format your HD, reinstall whatever OS you use + your programs. Start fresh.....don't just keep adding more shit on top of more shit. That's a real good way to snag a virus or a trojan an not even notice it.Originally posted by BDogg4821

The funny thing about that, though, is that about 4 months ago I got back from a vacation and my harddrive was fried from a storm. I had to buy a new one and completely start fresh. I didn't even have a disc with drivers on it so I had to go hunting on the web to find everything. I would think that my O/S would be still fairly good.
Well, you CAN do a LOT of damage in 4 months LOL
How many programs have you installed/uninstalled in the past 4 months?
How many things load at start up? (open the run box from the start menu and type in "msconfig" without the quotes)
Do you have Real player/Real One installed?
Do you defrag often?
There's many things that can hinder a system's preformance...even in such a short period of time.

if the hdd was fried, chances are other stuff on the board was too--cards are probably ok but maybe some ram was fried?
if you have ram problems you get lots of bsod's and restarts
Well, I think you nailed it on the head right there and everybody just keeps on talking about other stuff that it's not. Oh well, that sucks for those who aren't paying attention.
BTW, my computer does the same thing ever since I upgraded to a GeForce 4 Ti 4600 Video Card. I know it's the power supply, but I'm just too cheap to buy a new one. I'll get around to it eventually.

:mellow You beat me to it, Win is a bit ram hungry even with a secondary connection, and as I found out the hard way a bad stick of ram can really screw things up. Also the powersupply willcause major problems, as a friend of mine found out. He tried 2 different cheap cases, you know the kind the ones that are always on sale, with 350w power supplies, and it kept crashing. So we tried my 250w supply, and a-open case, and it worked. Krell can correct me, but I think a lot them are grosely overated.Originally posted by notbob

yeah... power supplies can (and usually are) be very over rated. unless you go for the high end brands, you could be missing over 25 watts easily.
DEER LORD Krell, the man asked for help, not to fry his brain in an overdose of technical analysys LOL(meant to be funny ).. Although everything you stated could potentially be a problem. I am going with power supply, i had this same problem recently when running taxing programs on my computer, it would just reboot or freeze up. Tried MB drivers, checked IRQ's, flashed MB bios even, swapped ram, nothing,
changed power suply, and no more reboot.

WOW!!!!!!
Hadn't checked back in a while and was amazed to see how many people had responded. Also, I was awed by the amount of knowledge you people seem to portray about a computer and all of its inards. To be perfectly and pathetically honest, most of the stuff you guys were talking about made only about 1% sense to me, LOL. Really, I'm not kidding. Anyways, I did notice, the other day, that when I got back onto my computer after a while, everything was great, one upload going, and one download going. I clicked to surf the internet and after a few sites visited, the computer just restarted again without warning. There were no error messages. The screen just went blank and started rebooting.
Anyways, I am willing to try the power supply idea. I don't know, though, where to begin. What exactly do I need to buy. I'm sure I can install it (I at least have a little bit of computer knowledge, LOL), but I'm not sure the component that I need. If you guys could get back to me, that would be fantastic.
Once again, thank you for all the support, you guys. Real sorry about the first message posted with all of the rage. I guess you guys can actually be nice after all. LOL
Thanks
p.s. Krell, that long message you gave me did fry my brain!
What Krell and the others were saying, if you had been reading what was being said, was that the power supply may have been damaged in the power surge that felled the hard drive. You're centering on the fact that it's a 450Mhz as though it can be powered by a double-A battery. Any computer with a bad power supply, regardless of its processor speed, is going to behave strangely (or not at all).Originally posted by Dealie
(shakes his head sadly)
You do NOT need a new ps for a 450mhz.
(that actually cracks me up. winmx needs more power. LOL)
And you shouldnt listen to what people say really.
I see people being told alot of WRONG info by self proclaimed experts around here. Every aoluser with a compaq thinks he's an expert anymore.
It's... sad.
For pc support this is one of the LAST places you should look.
Also, if you've been seeing a lot of "wrong info", why don't you submit some of the right info?
