A week or so ago I had some major problems with the default fonts on my laptop and I have been needing to wipe it out for quite some time, so I decided to go ahead and do it, and reinstall the OS. (XP home)
Since I have done so, it has been running a little bit strangly, even though I have installed very minimal programs back on, its like something is bogging it down in the background, when I am on a web page, the scrollling seems to lag and goes up/down in slow skips as opposed to a smooth scroll. And when I am on a the msn messenger if I were to to nudge someone, the sound is quick but the movement of the window is very slow and labored.
I usually set my power options to make it go to sleep and disconnect from the network when I close it or when I walk away from it for some period of time, but even though I have set that, it still never does, only the screen saver comes on but it never disconnects or goes to sleep, which causes it to get very warm and the fan is constantly running.
Can anyone give me some pointers as to why this is happening??:icon_scra
When you re-install Windows, did you install on top of old Windows OS or was it a clean install?
install ure graphics drivers and nothing will be "bogged down"Originally Posted by The Violet Storm

Digital Junkie, Yes it was a clean install, I wiped everything out first, I think I had a few tweaks, which I have not done again because its hard to remember, but I didnt think it would make that big of a difference.
Silentscream, help me out with what you are talking about, I am not sure what graphics drivers are, pardon me for being so stupid, lol, just when I think I know alot, I realize, I know nothing. errrrggg!!
He is talking about your video/graphics card's driver, check the video card manufacturer's web site for the latest version for that card or the one came with your laptop.
Hmmmmmmm, I looked in my device manager, and my video controllers have a yellow question mark next to them. And when I try the hardware update wizard, it cannot find a driver for it. But down by my sound/video controllers its shows "legacy video controllers" and show that they are working properly.
Am I missing the Video/graphics card driver??? I have looked on the Toshiba support website, (my laptop is a Toshiba Satelite L150-S104) and there is no driver available for the video hardware.
Obviously I need something or I wouldnt have those yellow question marks in my device manager, but cant find a thing. HELP! I am learning here. Where do I Find my graphics drivers???
Go to following site for drivers, you'll need to join but it's free!
DriverGuide : http://members.driverguide.com/index.php
get belarc advisor its free and tells u everything about ure system
once u have identified ure graphics/video device u can then google for the drivers (most likely nvi dia or ati)
post in this thread if u need more help
.
Do you have a driver disc for your laptop or a restore disc? If it's a restore disc, the drivers might be on it, otherwise there might be a driver disc for all the embedded hardware.
yeah but if it was anything like the disk i got with my laptop u cant install the drivers without the modded version of xp too as they are all bundled in and hiddenOriginally Posted by AgentV3

Ok, thanks you guys, I dont have time to get on this til a bit later, but I will post back with what I found.
Can you explain what belarc advisor is?? Is it something I find online? I have never heard of it.
Tried alot of different tweaks for my system, and it still hasnt sped up, hopefully when I get this driver issue figured it will solve my problem.
Thank you, for all your help, will post back soon.
By the way, is this going to take care of the power setting problem too??
hmm probs not, im not sure about the power settingsOriginally Posted by The Violet Storm

edit
have u tried manually putting it to sleep/standby ?
I have been gone all night last night and all day today, so I still need to check out that site that digital junkie recommended, which I will be doing tonight.
SilentScream--I have pushed the button that the lid normally pushes down and makes it go to sleep when I close the lid, and it does nothing now, but as for any other manual way to make it go to sleep I guess I am not sure how to do that.
I am downloading the belarc advisor now, I hope I know how it works. :-) Let ya know. :-}
Ok, I am going to post some of the results of Belarc Advisor for my laptop. Cuz I am not sure what some things are. Which one is my graphics/video divice?? Is there one??
