Army Recommends Death for Accused GIs

An Army investigator has recommended the death penalty for four soldiers accused of murder during a raid in Iraq.

Lt. Col. James P. Daniel Jr. made the recommendation in report obtained Saturday by The Associated Press.

Daniel found several aggravating factors that warrant a sentence of death in the case of four soldiers accused of killing three men during the May raid in the Salahuddin province.

Staff Sgt. Raymond L. Girouard, Spc. William B. Hunsaker, Pfc. Corey R. Clagett, and Spc. Juston R. Graber, all of the Fort Campbell, Ky.- based 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, were accused in the deaths.

The soldiers have claimed they were ordered to "kill all military-age males" during a raid on an island on a canal in the province. According to statements from some of the soldiers, they were told that the target was an al-Qaida training camp.

Hunsaker told investigators that he and Clagett were attacked by the three men and shot them in self-defense. Clagett said he was hit in the face and Hunsaker claimed he was stabbed during the attack.

"I had felt this action necessary for they had tried to use deadly force on me and my comrade," Hunsaker wrote in a statement.

Well, there's killing and there's unnecessary evil killing.
If there were no prosecutions like these, think of how the civilians would feel.

If the people didnt want them dead or there was no risk. Then they shouldnt have entered the building to raid a terrorist hut. Send in the UN to talk to them. Why kill people who are serving our country while taking all the risk. I leave it a judgment call by them. If they feel unsafe, go blasting. I wish the army would shoot anyone that comes near them in a old car. It could prevent alot of bombs going off.

What judgement call are you talking about? Are you saying even if it was unreasonable judgement, it's still justified because it's war time? As for "if they feel unsafe, go blasting," what are you trying to advocate? Frenzy uncontrolled army that don't give a damn about non-american human life?
Americans are always advocating human rights every chance they get, so why shouldn't be apply these human rights to people of other countires?
I say that's just giving army too much power. And you know where that can lead to.

If people want things done in a civil way, then why is the army called in? Its of last resort. Killing three people during a raid doesnt constitute their own lives to be given up. I have limited info on this, but last time I checked. Killing a person doesnt make a person they killed respawn. It wont bring them back, all it is doing is hurting more people and families. If there killing was not justified then throw them out of the service. There given weapons. I expect them to use them then other then to be reported as another soldier killed in action. Plus, if the good folks in the al-Qaida training camp killed one of our soldiers, and then reported to his commanding officer. They wouldnt take their life, they would smile and applaud the killing of an American troop.

Two key figures you have to look at. 1 Our troops arent expandable. 2. It was al-Qaida training camp.

    To Don webb too.
This line is complete bullshit imo, if you murder civilian targets
you deserve to be put to death as much as any murderer in the US

What Iraqi civilians are not equal to american?
Murder is Murder...if anything I am suprised the Army had the balls to deal
a real punishment as opposed to holding a shaky inquiry where in the end
they get an honorable discharge and a slap on the wrist.

If we want to do anything positive over there we need to at least
show the arab world we look down on atrocities performed by our troops
and will punish them for it

I agree 100%! If the US Military is going to be taken seriously, then they need to deal harshly with people who MURDER innocent civilians in a US military uniform. And to me, there is no other word but murder.

It wasn't a general that took over the White House. It was a lame Lieutenant.
It wasn't to long ago that a whacked out corporal lead his country into invading other countries. His name was Adolph Hitler. And his Nazi parties dealings with Prescott Walker Bush were the foundation of the Bush dynasty(until Bush was forced to stop in 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy Act).I guess ol' Prescott learned from the master.
