Pentagon Warns Congress, Iraq on Verge of Civil War

AXcess News) Washington - The Pentagon warned Congress that sectarian fighting in Iraq has pushed the US-occupied Middle Eastern nation to the brink of civil war, with Iraqi casualties up over 51 percent in the last three months.

Fighting between Sunni and the predominent Shiite muslims in Iraq outweighs battles between US-led military forces and insurgents, the Pentagon said in its quarterly report to Congress on the situation in the Middle East, calling the fighting between Muslim groups the "core conflict" that if not dealt with, will push Iraq into a civil war.

Sectarian death squads, anti-American insurgents and foreign terrorists have combined, raised the death toll in Iraq by over 1,000 per month, or 51 percent, between June and August, the Pentagon report states.

In Baghdad alone, the bodies of 3,400 Iraqis - 90 percent of them executed - were delivered to the coroners office between June and July, the report states.

Compared to the previous 3-month period, the Pentagon's report to Congress says the average weekly attacks on Iraqi and US troops, as well as civilians, has increased 15 percent.

The Pentagon's report did state that while conditions in Iraq had worsened over attacks between sectarian groups on Iraqi civilians, a civil war could be prevented, though Iraqis themselves are less optimistic and US lawmakers are becoming more divided over the Iraq war then ever before. Democrats have been building momentum in their political push for votes this fall in the coming elections in November and the Pentagon's report showing that Iraq is on the brink of civil war with Sunni and Shiite muslim fighting on the rise is going to be one more reason lawmakers say the US should end its Iraq occupation as soon as possible.

Democrats blame the Bush administration for its failure to secure the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan and plan a rally Tuesday with General Wesley Clark to promote a report they say details the failures of Republicans to curb the growing violence in the Middle East over the last five years.

Iraq's the product of British colonialism anyways, they oughta just separate themselves from one another and do their own thing.

The U.S. puts the troops in,
The U.S. pulls the troops out,
The U.S. bombs your country and the bodies fly about.
You can kill each other, of that I have no doubt.

Bush: Iraq Has Not Fallen Into Civil War

President Bush on Saturday kept up his pre-election offensive on Iraq despite a new Pentagon report describing a deteriorating security situation there.

Initial results from a new U.S.-Iraqi campaign to improve the security situation in Baghdad are encouraging, Bush said, and insurgents have failed to drive Iraq into full-blown civil war.

"Our commanders and diplomats on the ground believe that Iraq has not descended into a civil war," Bush said in his weekly radio address. "They report that only a small number of Iraqis are engaged in sectarian violence, while the overwhelming majority want peace and a normal life in a unified country."

The president acknowledged "a bloody campaign of sectarian violence" and the "difficult and dangerous" work of trying to end it.

On Friday, however, the Pentagon reported that death squads increasingly targeting mainly Iraqi civilians heighten the risk of civil war. The report, the latest in a series required by Congress, said the Sunni-led insurgency "remains potent and viable."

"Conditions that could lead to civil war exist in Iraq, specifically in and around Baghdad, and concern about civil war within the Iraqi civilian population has increased in recent months," the report said.

    Absolutely,

What they need is an Iron fisted totalitarian ruler who doesn't give shit about Islam and will force these fractured sociopath groups to behave. Someone with secret police and a world famous mustache. I hate to say it but they need Saddam.

Hope that was a joke....if not...try to tell that to WHOLE FAMILIES Saddam has ordered murdered. I don't agree with what has happened in Iraq, but Saddam is NOT the answer!

If it takes that, then mabye we ought to put a wall back around Berlin and let the families that suffered there stay seperated like they were before.

And if it takes a police state to put things right in Iraq or anywhere else, then this is one fucked up world! A world portrayed like in the book 1984, is not really one I would want to live in.

But I do agree about Iraq being a screwed up place and it is going to take a lot to fix it....if it ever can be fixed. But the Iraqi people are the ones that are gonna have to be wanting to change it. Not just the US, UN or whoever else.

at least wen saddam was there there wasnt this much deaths. damn.its like take the terror out and put more terror in. what they need is land seperations like in lebonan. sinni in one area shia in on and christians in one with druze in other parts. this helps keep them seperated.

I was joking and yet I was serious. I’ve read your posts enough to know you are smart enough to know the differences between Germany (1940) and Iraq (today). 60+ years ago the world was fighting one cause against one enemy aligned with the abolishment of one backwards idea.

Today the world is yet divided again. If you have ever read the Quran you would know that Islam will not rest until the whole world is Islam The difference is the teachings of Islam is every bit as backwards and more so then the Nazi regime and yet for some reason we are forced to except this. Keeping a culture as absurd as this under check by a Psycho dictator is more then acceptable from my viewpoint. The problem is not the people but an Idea.

And for the record at least as many Iraqis have died under American watch or by American cause (sanctions, bombs, etc….) in the last 16 years then Hussein brought in his entire career.
