Almost all slow speed problems are not related to setup, but related to the torrent you are trying to download.

How many seeds and peers are there in the swarm?

    Hmm... Sounds alright to me.

I'm downloading a Torrent right now. Your best choice would probably be to find a torrent with

many seeds and peers. I recommend Meganova Torrents - it will tell you how many hosts you get, and

    normally, there are a lot.

I'm getting about 68kbps right now, and that's pretty damn fast for my connection. There are 39 Seeds and 29 Peers.

That's your issue then. Only one person with a complete copy, and for all you know he could be in Poland on dial-up...

Try another torrent with HUNDREDS of seeds and you should do better. If it still is poor than maybe it's a setup issue.

To find your max theoretical download limit, take your advertised speed in kb and divide by 8.

For example, if you have 512kbs advertised download, then the maximum you could ever get on BT is 512/8 = 64kB/s. Now keep in mind you will only see this when you have massive amounts of seeds and not too many leechers... usually at least a 10:1 ratio of seeds to leechers. And the traffic on your subnet is low and the stars are aligned etc. Usually if you get 1/2 of the above number, 64/2 = 32kB/s then you are doing good on a healthy torrent.

If you have 1.5Mbps service, then 1.5 * 1024 = 1536kbps, and for BT you can max out at 1536/8 = 192kB/s speed.

Comcast is dishing out 12Mbps in my area now, and I see speeds around 700-800kbps down on healthy torrents.
