Help with playing a movie, DESPERATELY NEED HELP

So, i've been through and arouns every google and faq i can find and i only get bits and peices that come close to helping me.

problem: cannot play a downloaded movie

what i did: i downloaded utorrent and successfully downloaded and seeded a movie ***no file names, please*** cheesy flick from 70s-80s. i finished the download but when i try to go to the same file (where i saved the torrent) there's nothing there unless i open that file through utorrent. i have no idead how to play the movie or even where the downloaded .avi is.

what i tried to do: i downloaded both the K-lite codec pack(full version) and winrar neither did a dang thing.

any help greatly appreciated, you will be smothered with virtual hugs of thanks.

This is a screenshot of uTorrent. Highlight your movie, go to the bottom and see where the file downloaded. That should get you your file.



As far as playing it... The two most frequent .avi formats require the dixv and/or xvid codecs to be installed on your pc.

Get the divx codec here:

Get the Koepi's Xvid codec here:

(I like Koepi's, I think it is the best.)

Try to play your movie. If you have a sound problem, you might need to download a seperate AC3 audio codec... it is here:

Note: There is a newer version out there but it is still under development. The one listed here is stable.

Install them to the default directories. They will work with most common players on your system.

Finally, grab a copy of gspot. It is a free program that can virtually play (test) any video/audio file and determine if your system needs any codecs to play it... It can even give you the name of the codec you need. Google the needed codec and download it. Gspot is here:

I really encourage people not to get bundled codecs, just grab those you need. It will help to eliminate any codec conflicts that may hinder your ability to play files.

I use DIVX player if windows media player doesnt play it, installed xvid codec into windows media player.

Don't install codecs into specific players unless that is where the default wants to install. The idea behind codecs is that you want all your players to be able to access it... A codec is nothing more than translation software.

Did you try GSpot yet? That will give you some very relavent info on the file.

*Pls excuse me in advance, but was the file broken into several files? Did you join them properly? I had to ask...

you guys are all really awesome, i haven't tried playing it yet because im still doing my part and trying to seed to 1:1. but ive already downloaded most of the programs you all suggested. thanks again. i'll hit this thread back if it still doesnt work. :icon_salu

ffdshow should handle most everything besides Ogg Vorbis, quicktime, flash video and maybe a couple others but for the most of the videos you watch it should do the hola hoops for you.

This is probably not a codec issue.

mahal5254, learn to USE the software

Utorrent has paths, the DOWNLOAD TO path, and the SAVE in path.

You know the file name right? You know how to use the search feature in Windows, right? USE it.

Look at Wiccans post, you see the little gear symbol, looks like a donut . . . click it, and take 10 minutes to look around there

You can set the paths to whatever you like, such as D:\Utorent Incoming, and D:\Utorrent Completed.

BTW people, if you set the incoming path to one physical drive, then set the SAVE path to another physical drive, you just defragged your file upon complettion.

By default, utorrent will probably put the movie into your browser.. IE Or firefox.. It did mine. I had to open the folder through utorrent to see where its at. Chances are start in the browser.
