Mel needs your DVD burner help

Okay, Ive tried about everything and searched google but so far Ive only managed to get a head ache. Heres the trouble and details.

I have a Lite on DVDRW SOHW-812s which Ive had for a long time but recently its started to burn DVD's at only 2.4x's. That sucks balls as you can imagine. I first tried switched media I burned to and that didn't work. Next I tried different programs that didn't work. I got new drivers and that didn't work. I un-installed and re- installed my hard ware and still nothing. I tried burning a CD and it burned at the full 60x speed. I ran a speed test on the DVD and it reported it could burn at 16x but still the option will not pull up beyond 2.4x on any program.

Anyone seen this problem before or have a clue what I should try next? Im ready to throw it upside the wall and piss on it frankly. Please save me from having to buy a new one people. 34 minutes to burn a DVD is enough to make me stick my head in the oven. Thankfully its electric and I only burt my face.

Poor guy. My DVD burner is a 4X burner. I have to burn at 2X to avoid coasters.

I can't say your problem sounds familiar.

YOu may need to defrag your hard drive, and there is a setting in the back of your dvd burner to make it into CS instead of master /slave. You may need the right cable to make cs work. CHeck to see if DMA is on or off, may have something to do with it. I know if you reinstall windows, everything will run faster and smoother.

I've encountered this phenomena in my journeys over the internet (vaguely sounding like a starship captain) but did not document it in my journals....the problem is familiar to me like an early borg encounter but I still don't know what to do about it but offer my condolences.

Might have something to do with a Starforce copy-protection driver?

Thanks for the replies guys. The Drive has worked fine for a year or two with no problems at all until about a week or two ago. DMA is not the issue, ive tried that. I'm going to replace the IDE cable later today and see if that helps. I don't plan on changing the jumpers, its on cable select now, Im fairly sure. I checked defrag and Windows is saying its time so thats a good bet, thanks Shawners. Sometimes its the thing right in front of your face that you don't think about. If this solves it Im going to kick myself in the nuts! Ive just got use to not having to defrag XP.

    Lite-on Omnipatcher, grab it. http://codeguys.rpc1.org/patchers.html
Lite-on latest firmware for your drive, grab it. http://www.liteonit.com
Use omnipatcher to patch firmware with all sorts of fancy settings. (Adjusting write speeds, Write strategy reassignment, and other real good tweaks).
    Flash patched firmware.

Will that fix your problem? maybe, maybe not. but the first thing i do to all my lite-on drives is flash it with omnipatcher hacked firmware. it's good stuff.

They're dirt cheap nowadays, although it would be nice to know what happened your old drive. I would suggest resetting your cmos and upgrading the firmware on the drive to see if this fixes the problem.

I did everything under the sun to try and fix it, except resetting cmos. It has to be the drive itself as burning CD's was not effected. It would still burn them a full speed. My new drive wasn't dirt cheap however. I did look at some cheap ones but decided to get one I would be happy with a very long time, hopefully.
