PeerGuardian & Protowall - Any substantial benefits?

Just out of curiosity, is there any substantial benefits in using programs like PeerGuardian or Protowall? There seems to be a lot of conflicting opinions about wether it is worth using or not. I'm interested in what some of the veteran p2p users have to say about this.

    Thanks for reading. :)

They are great leecher tools. By leecher tools I mean you can use them to block someone downloading from you but as far as it goes for providing you any type of substantial protection its no better than whistling in a graveyard to ward off ghosts.

No it's not as your ip can still clearly be seen downloading/uploading as its still sent to the tracker.

it's funny.I stopped using PG sometime in the last few months and didn't even realize it.After using PG and protowall for years(not simultaneously) they just became one more irritating thing running in the background.
Like Spookey said-your IP is showing anyway so I don't see the point any more.

Blocking the right IP wouldnt allow a connection and wouldnt or shouldnt be seen on the other end. Since it doesnt list all non-communicational IP addressess. I see seeds of 200, and maybe 10 im connected to is shown.

Just set your client to communicate with the tracker via a proxy server then , whalla, Your ip is not seen. You can set it up to run thru the tor network and it goes thru the onion router and is encrypted.

I want to ask....how is it encrypted? and to add...I didn't know that's what that was for...I erroneously thought it proxied all your traffic not just the tracker communication....now that I know this....it changes everything. :O)

As Dark Messenger backs slowly into the forest the shadows cross his face, obscuring him from all who would witness his unspeakable acts of filesharing.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when, use of protowall and PG actually made fasttrack useable for me. Using them both, I could actually find real files!!! Real files people!!!! I couldn't believe it!!!!

I doubt it "protects" you all that much, but I found them useful as a tool to filter out fake files.

Hmm... I don't know the first thing about proxy servers, but this seems like an interesting idea. I will have to look into it and see what I can learn.

I think PeerGuardian and Protowall are helpful when you're doing peer to peer downloading on a network. They're able to filter out fake files and keep things realtively good. As people mentioned here, they are really not that helpful with torret downloads since you're dealing with the tracker which throws your IP into a big "pool." If someone wanted to, they only need look into this pool of IPs and not have to ping your computer specifically.
