    Turning Off The Computer

I have a general computer question that I think has been asked before but I've received mixed answers.

What are the benifits of turning off the computer, say at 9pm every night then turning it back on at 7am. Would it increase hard drive life? Would it reduce the power bill? What if it was turned off at 2am in the morning then back on at 7am? Would there be any difference?

From my standpoint, I leave it on all the time and only reboot when I need to go into safe mode for maintenance.

1st Question: No it would actually make it harder on ur harddrive.

2nd Question: by a little yes.

#rd Question: yeah you'd save a little less on the powerbill.

From personal experience it all depends on if u have a 'good' computer or a bad computer...by good computer I mean one that runs quiet..the fan is quiet, the harddrive doesn't make noise and the cpu doesn't overheat.

if you have a computer that's quiet its generally a sgin u got a good computer...its harder on a car stopping it and starting it and actually takes more gas to start it then to leave it idling.
Same way with your air conditioning..its cheaper to leave it on all the time at a certain temperature because it takes more power to keep trying to recool something that should have been cool already and just maintained.

Only bad thing about leaving your computer on 24/7 is that it will run up your powerbill...don't know how much though as I've never measured that myself.

So the initial surge of power to ur pc is bad from turning it on...and repetitive turning off and on is bad for it because of this initial surge of current.

That's all I can think of on this.

Only turn it off after installing new software or updating firmware. As well as booting it up when neede. XP runs for a month or more without problems or crashes. I just turn turn it off every other week after i update stuff. During the night im either queueing DIVX video to DVD or downloading dvd's. And then in the morning time, do all the extracting and burning before work.. Computers now days are a work horse. Windows95 had to be shut off every other day or so, 98 had bugs and various problems. ME had its problems as well as 2000 with staying on. XP or any software to date can let your PC run clean and free.
If you want to increase space or storage. Use windows washer, and registry mechanic to get rid of excess junk in the registry.

My computer runs really quiet due to the thick case I have my computer in. I have installed a couple extra fans to generate good air movement to keep it cool as well.

My mom really wanted to know the answer to saving money on the power bill because it was too high for last month and we wanted to know if it would make any difference.

Thanks a bunch for all that information!!

It wouldnt make any difference, its a small factor. Turn your monitor off, and usually put it on power saver mode so it turns off when no one is there. But keep your thermestat at 79 degrees, and dont open the fridge every few minutes or vacume every day.
