i didn't check lifehackers links but... winamp will let you copy audio files to ipuds

floola for if you just want to copy songs/videos to and from your ipod. its free. also, if you wanan go hardcore and mod your ipod, go with rockbox alternative firmware for your ipod. it allows you to put custom games and play many many more things than you normally could. rockbox is also for other mp3 players besides ipods as well.
edit: also for converting dvds to ipod format, use clonedvd mobile and anydvd. its the best easiest method to do so.
