i was just thinking to my self whats the point in .com why couldnt somebody makea weadress like www.zeropaid.zp?
It used to mean .org, edu, etc. for non-profit organizations, but it doesn't mean much these days since they can also link those sites to their profit oriented web sites! The real problem is, we are running out of IP addresses & need to upgrade the system.
Hmmmm, cool you learn something every day

Interresting to read but wont really answer the questions you asked, I don't think, but maybe it will hold answers to other questions you may have wondered about.
Hard as ever and here to make you people believe...as long as there is one person to hold hope and dream...A GOD...will never die!
I guess if zeropaid ever became an internationally recognized country then .zp could be used.

Some torrent sites need to have a .ORG behind it, so it can be marked as an organization :P zp Alot of big sites register their name with all different endings, just so that no one can use it and gain high valume amount of traffic and get derailed from the real site.
Torrent torrent torrent torrent, torrent torrent, torrent torrent torrent torrent.

.org. net. com are top level domains. something to do with the way the internet is organized and structured. can't answer anymore than that cause i don't know anymore.

>why couldnt somebody makea webadress like www.zeropaid.zp?
Because .zp does not exist as a top level domain.

>The real problem is, we are running out of IP addresses
No. That's irrelervant to the question, it is possible to have lots of domain names pointed at one ip address.
The shortage of ip addresses has turned out not to be as big a problem as predicted.
>& need to upgrade the system.
Wrong. Reclaiming underused blocks would be sufficient for a long time to come and practically zero cost compard to rolling out ip6.
A load of big companys and institutions have /8 blocks of 16 million addreses that they only use a tiny fraction of.
Halliburton dosn't need a /8 and should not have been given it in the first place (same as the billions in no-bid military and Iraq contracts).
Hewlett packard and compaq merged so they should at least give back one of their /8 blocks.
Ford should give back their /8 when their overwhelming debt sinks them in a few years.
There is no practical reason for the US department of defense, Ford, IBM, MIT, xerox park etc to have big blocks anymore. They don't need very many servers to be accessable by the general public and having corporate computers reachable from outside is nothing but a security nightmare and an endless source of spam from hacked machines.
>I guess if zeropaid ever became an internationally recognized country then .zp could be used.
No, if ICANN ever descides to make .zp available and if whatever organisation it is delagated to sets rules that allow it then zeropaid.zp could be used.

The web is not the internet.
The domain name system is not the internet.

@zaphodiv,
I agree there is not a shortage of ip addresses today, but I disagree & I believe it is cheaper to upgrade today then tomorrow. There are countries that coming online, they are also grabbing up ip addresses, one day we'll have to anyway!
the domain name system works in a similar way to the mail system, with each bit of information given helping to narrow down just where a piece of information should be sent. Entering a top level domain into a url is much like writing the name of a country on an envelope as part of an address.
Originally top level domains were intended to divide the internet up into recognizable areas, with (us) government websites having a .gov domain, .org for non-profit organizations, etc. The reason that .zp cannot be used is because that particular top level domain does not exist.
