i downloaded a couple of albums which were just one long mp3. does anyone know any good software for splitting them into individual songs?
i woulkd really like one that detects gaps and splits them automatically as i cant be bothered to play over the whole albums and split them myself.

Really good question, Ive been trying to find a program that does this properly, and one that dont need to be a genius to figure how it works.

MP3 TrackMaker works well. You can find it on Download.com.
It is a trail, but you can find a way to fix that.
May I suggest MP3DirectCut?
It´s what I use...
It´s easy peasy and free. You can also get at download.com

Try Sound Forge. I'm using Sound Forge XP4.5 right now, tbut I'm pretty sure newer versions are out there. This is a sound file editor that is easy to use--I've used it to chop out loops and remix entire songs as well as to fix mp3's that have "abrupt endings" and to chop up entire album mp3's into individual songs. Here's how to chop up an album into single tracks. Open the album file in Sound Forge (may take a minute since it should be a fairly large file), then look for places where the sound file graphic drops off to nothing--those are the individual track separations. Then just go to the "trim" function under the edit menu, highlight the individual track, and then trim away the rest of the album. Be careful to "save as" and not hit "save" or your single track will replace the entire album. Rename the file, and then reopen the album and go on to the next track. If you trim away to much, just hit "undo." If you left too long an empty space in front or at the end, highlight and cut. It is really quite easy. It's about a hundred bucks off the shelf when a new version comes out--I got mine with Acid, but someone probably has it out there on a file share.
