from the cheap-and-early dept
We've gone over the numerous ways that movie studios can compete against things like movie downloads, but what about counterfeit DVDs sold on the street? In many cases, these DVDs sell because there's really no alternative. That's why it seemed to make sense for studios to try releasing movies on DVD at the same time they're released in the theaters. However, Aaron deOliveira points us to a fascinating experiment by Universal Pictures over in Russia, where counterfeit DVDs are seen as a very big issue for the movie industry. Rather than sending out their own fake police force to rough up street vendors, they're actually competing by selling "Cheap'n'early DVDs". These are DVDs that come out much sooner (four weeks) after the movie is released, but the quality (and the price) are much lower. A few months later, the studio comes out with the full version of the DVD release -- much higher quality with lots of extras. In other words, the cheap and early DVDs are clearly just to compete against the counterfeit DVDs on the street. It's still not entirely clear why they need the separate release windows rather than just giving people a choice, but it does seem like an interesting experiment.

No movie is worth getting a cheap quality alternative, or one without extras.
17 USC § 1008 Prohibition on certain infringement actions:
No action may be brought under this title alleging infringement of copyright based on the noncommercial use by a consumer for making digital musical or analog musical recordings.
Well if you believe the mantra of the media conglomerates any copy is just that. Which is why I find irony in this story, they preach the aspects of superior quality, then release their own rips.Originally Posted by Lord_of_the_Dense
Just release the damned DVD.

Early movies that are being sold as DVD's are TELECINE or dvd screeners. I seen the RETAIL version of King Kong come out 3 months prior to dvd release, and right after a screener appeared on the net. Nanny Mcphee was spread online 3 days after theater release, full DVD with extras and such.
Of course people get PDVD from these sellers and put them on the net. OF course now we get universal to give movies out early and get uploaded on the net.
im sure they dumb down the quality far below what even the average pirated rip is. but even so, you have to give them credit for getting the right idea going for those countries. they are too damn expensive for those ppl

Theyre too damned expensive for us!
Some of the studios already deeply discount DVD prices to $3 for foriegn countries, then rape us and try to sue us for our copy!
bastards

let me fix that =)Originally Posted by Signa

And yeah some of the "DVDs" that are sold overseas are theatre rips done with a camera, not in fact the actual dvd. I know a guy who brings back stuff from overseas, and some of the "DVDs" that are early releases are such. But even those the quality isn't that bad, it's decent. Too expensive for those people? I don't know about you, but I can't remember the last time I bought something that wasn't groceries/food, tobacco, gas, or a household item. Bills & debt have pretty much ravaged the old entertainment fund at this point, lol.
how do they afford to sell so cheap? other countries may start selling there dvds online for profit.
Even if they do start selling the movies cheaper, I would still be to lazy to get off my ass and go find a store that would sell one fo those copies, instead of downloading the whole movie and not paying anything.
