Unhappy Windows2000 sound problem!! please help!!

Alrighty everyone I have a problem with Windows2000 (the only major problem I have had with the OS).

Let me give you a little background on my computer first.

Was a premade Compaq computer (5150WM). I was very nieve at the time and thought it was the best computer on the market. (This was about a year ago). Well after getting rid of EVERYTHING on it (long story) including Windows ME I installed Windows2000.

Well I had no sound at first! Then my friend found the ONLY drivers available for a computer like mine with Win2k @ compaq.com. It is SoundMAX Digital Integrated Audio... and yes I have onboard sound.. no sound card as far as I know.

Ok here is the problem (By the way if there is more information needed just say it and I'll tell you everything about my computer down to the color of the case):

When I boot my computer.. after a bit I notice that I lose sound for games, emulators, basic window sound (like double clicking folders and not hearing that click sound), sound in instant messengers, you get the idea. Well that's not the weirdest part... I DON'T lose sound with WinAmp 2.x. I can listen to music all I want whether the sound has gone out again or not. Oh and to get the sound with the programs back I just have to reboot my PC.

I know the reason why is because I need better, more compatible sound drivers.. but I do not know anywhere else to look as I have searched the compaq site inside and out... I have also searched Google couldn't find anything of what I was looking for.

Please respond!! This problem is really bugging me!!

    on board sound...

do you know wht mobo you have? with onboardsound... I dont think you should need to install any other drivers to make itwork... unless its for your speakers. hmm... but even then, no.... that driver might actually be hurting you. someone can correct me if Im wrong, but onboard sound drivers wont have anything to do with whatever OS you are using and, if you do need a driver, compaq should have sent you a disk containing it... if not Id go to the mobo manufacturers website and look for sound drivers for the board that you have....

thats all I can think of, I'll try and help if I can but its difficult online you know? and I am not the most knowledgable person in the world as it is...

Thanks gorphon for your quick response! Not to sound like a n00b or anything (even though I am hehe), but how do I check what kind of mobo I have? (I assume mobo is motherboard right?).

EDIT: Well besides the obvious, open up the case and look. But I am not so sure it has any labels on it because I have opened up my case a few times to add ram and a new video card.

    hmmm...

I was gonna say just go to control panel>system>device manager and look in system devices but that may not necessarily work for you if compaq had their mobos licensed from a manufacturer specifically for them... so you can use a prog like sisoft sandra to find out, there are others but they dont have as catchy names so I do notremember them...

other than that I can not think of much advice to give without being there and stuff... except that you NEED the right drivers.... if it were any other problem Idont think the sound would work even a bit.

a good prog for sys info and diagnostics, comes highly reccomended:aida32

    gorphon

Thanks for all of your help but I have solved the problem! I went to the compaq site again just look over their drivers again and what did I see? A new driver.

I installed it yesterday and rebooted and my sound is working PERFECTLY.

Once again thanks for the help :-)
