Wink Can someone explain something to me?

I'm pretty new to downloading and am having some limited success. There's a few basics I don't understand. I have only 0.5 meg broadband and am using BitTornado. I am averging about 30 but getting speeds up to 57kB/s on single downloads. Is that normal and my max capacity? Also, if I run two at the same time sometimes the sum of the two is more than 56 but only just. Does running 2 or 3 at the same time knacker your download speeds? Also my torrents keep stopping. I have only downloaded two movies in one go. Normally they will only run for about 20 minutes. I can't see any pattern or reason why. Have done loads of reading on the web but not found anyone with the same set up so have really got any answers so far. Please explain someone!

the more BT donwloads you have the more it will take from other active downloads, so yes...if you DL more than 1-2 torrents at a time you will see it slow down noticably.

You have limited bandwidth for broadband but you should still be able to pull around 50k with the right set up
but the question is, what is your setup?

If you can please give us a rundown on your home setup and how you are connected to the net and we can get more answers with that :D

Cheers Moneoa, I am using an external Speedtouch modem. I do occasionally get up to 50K but only if the torrent staying open. Normally they stop and I have to restart just when it's really going well. Only torrents break down, everything else coming in via the modem stays normal so there is no general breakdown on the web or anything major. I am doing a trillion restarts on the torrent to pick up a movie. Driving me nuts.

Ok now what type of BT client do you use?
Also if you can explain what you mean when you say "only if the torrent stays open"

Some clients work well some do not, this will again affect speed.

I am using BitTornado 0.3.7 - an experimental version. (Is that the 'client'?) By staying open I mean is continues to download/upload and doesn't freeze up. Looks like my speeds are about right then and as good as I'm gonna get until I upgrade the broadband. So now, if only I can stop the torrents freezing up and keep 'em going perhaps I'll stick at it.

i would recommend using http://www.utorrent.com/ due to the fact that is practically less than a 200 kb file. It gets great speeds and practically all the torrent trackers allow the use of this program.

utorrent was mentioned above and it is more stable than Btornado, give it a try and let us know if it works better. Bittornado is good but still in dev and can be silly.

Depending on your computer Azureus is also very good and reliable but it is a memory hog so it's reccomended only if you have decent ram.

Also if you use a firewall you need to let BT go through it...if you are not uploading anything because of firewall your download will stop. Even if you are uploading, a firewall can keep the tracker from seeing your upload and communicate with other clients and you will not get the credit for it...you would get the same effect..the torrent would eventually grind to a stop as the tracker thinks you are leeching.

If you need anymore help, feel free to come back to the thread and ask away :icon_thum

The other beauty in uTorrent is the built in links to portforwarding, which makes it an easy process.

Thanks everyone. I'll give uTorrent a go. I like the sound of stability and small file itself.

I don't know why your torrents would be stopping unless youre not uploading anything. Whats your upload speed?

Thanks everyone. I downloaded and tried uTorrent and everything is working just fine. I am now pulling 50+kB on my 0.5 meg line, i have limited my upload speed and the torrents are NOT STOPPING AT ALL. HOORAY!!!!!! Cheers mates, couldn't have done it without you. It may seem simple to you but I was struggling along in my ignorance. I love the info UTorrent 1.5 is giving me, it's much more interesting. Great site, great forum. I'm a happy bunny. Thanks again.
