So for ages my computers on my network were constantly being disconnected from my premium dsl connection. I finally started removing things to figure out what was the problem and found it was Azureus.
Without Azureus running my 6.0 mbps dsl is running beautifully. I turn it on and it's a series of constant disconnects. What can I do to prevent this?
I'm using a linksys RP31P2. I can't get a better one because I have Vonage and that is the Vonage router.
Things others suggested:
--Someone suggested disabling NAT, which I know is a bad idea but tried for the heck of it and my router became inaccessible, and i had to reset it.
--They don't post firmware upgrades for the vonage router.
Any help?
Explain in more detail the disconnects. What does disconnect mean to you, what proof etc.
Secondly, have you checked your event viewer for 4226 errors? It could be that your OS is the bottleneck.
.
It's most evident on my laptop, where I am constantly disconnected from the internet. Any chat program I'm running will say "disconnected" then eventually reconnect. these disconnections happen almost continously. likewise on my laptop or pc, anything i'm running, frequent disconnects.
I say it's azureus because it only happens if azureus is running. otherwise i can run tons of internet and other apps without difficulties.
i do not know how to check that log you speak of.
If you found out it was azureus, why not change bit torrent client?
most people think it will happen if i try another, but if you're experienced in these matters, shawners and think i should, i'll install utorrent.
This thread sucks ass
Its basic common sense that if your P2P app sucks all the bandwidth then other apps can not communicate . . . what . . so you think there's magic dust in there? Changing clients and running them full throttle will not help this.
What KIND of connection, is it ethernet or wireless? How may PCs do you have connected to the router?
If youre too lazy to google 4226 error and even investigate what is the event viewer, I have no regard for you, stick with AOL and good luck.
Somebody with way too much time on their hands, lay this out for this person.
.
i really don't think all that insulting was necessary. i will "google" your wisdom and thank you and have a good night
to anyone else willing to help, i have 6.0/768 DSL connection. the notebook is using a linksys wireless g access point. the PC uses the router via ethernet cable. that is the total number of computers hooked up to the network.
There were two 4226 errors on 2/2, one on 2/6, and one on 2/8. None today. despite my running azureus and trying advice and getting the disconnects.
So if anyone can help me with this I'd be very grateful. I hope I haven't been shunned for accidentally angering the mighty Krell. I just tried this expensive and laborious process http://vonage.nmhoy.net/wrt54gl.html and my vonage router will not work, and by not work I mean the GL router connects to the internet but the vonage router behind it won't show up in the device list, won't respond to attempts to configure it via the GL router, and the phone light won't come on.
Shunned, are you kiding?, you'll win a popularity contest.
Are you trying to daisy chain routers like they are hubs?
DSL MODEM ---> ROUTER ---> ROUTER ---> PC
Whats your hookup?
.
Hi again, thanks for talking. It's obvious from searching your posts that you've been helping people for a long time and I appreciate it, for what it's worth.
Yes, DSL (briteport) modem, then the WRT54GL, then the RT31P2, then there is a PC connected by LAN, and a wireless notebook connected via the wireless feature of the WRT54GL. This was supposed to be a workaround for the fact that a) you need the RT31P2 to have Vonage phone service but b) bitorrent overwhelms its poor ability to handle so much activity.
I should also point out that I have taken these steps with the WRT54GL *after* I made my original post here.
Ive helped people before till my eyes bled only to have them throw crap on my solution, so I am not overly tolerant of people that arent willing to make any investment in their own situation. This is one hella thankless bbs.
That being said, youre setup isnt all that complicated, but there are some interdependencies here that are a bit off.
Where to start . .
I do not see that your modem is PPPoE so lets not change the MTU from 1500 in your registry yet.
I am also not over confident in the post of the url you provided, I suggest you read this thread in stead - http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic5032.html
A lot of these cheap linksys and cicso routers do not handle P2P traffic esp well. You may want to consolidate these two devices in to a single router with rj11 ports.
Compare the working settings in the above page and report back, I suggest you reset both routers completely before you make changes, and start form a known good.
Strange as this config may be, this is what I did to get phone/pc's working
I can tell you how I have my wrt54g and rt31p2 hooked up. The wrt54g is hooked to the cable modem and the rt31p2 is hooked to the wrt54g. I changed the local ip address on the rt to 192.168.1.2 so it is on same subnet as wrt54g (192.168.1.1) Set the rt for static ip address 192.168.1.10, leave subnet alone and set gateway to address of wrt54g (192.168.1.1)and turn off dhcp on the rt also. type ipconfig from dos prompt on your computer and see what dns servers are, put these in rt where it asks for dns entries. run 1 ethernet cable from wrt54g to Internet port on rt and then run another cable from any lan port on the wrt54g to any lan port on the rt. I had to connect both of these ports to get phone and pc's working.
.
Ah, i suspected part of the problem might be the fact that the rt31p2 was 192.168.15.1 and the GL is 192.168.1.1, let me look all this over and thank you I will report back.
Okay actually it appears the author of the guide made a typo. I was supposed to connect to WAN port of the vonage router, not the LAN port. The Vonage router appears to work now. However I still have a problem with bittorrent slowing down the network. I no longer get webpage timeouts and wireless disconnections aplenty, but for example it will take nearly a minute for a webpage to load, compared to pages loading instantaneously when Azureus is not running. This is true of the wireless or wired connection. What can I do? I have a 6.0/768 DSL going here, that speed tests report are running beautifully.
