FEB. 9 12:49 P.M. ET Google Inc. is offering a new tool that will automatically transfer information from one personal computer to another, but anyone wanting that convenience must authorize the Internet search leader to store the material for up to 30 days.
That compromise, sought as part of a free software upgrade released Thursday, might be more difficult to swallow now that the Bush administration is demanding to know what kind of information people have been hunting through Google's search engine.
Google is fighting the Justice Department's subpoena in a federal court battle that's focusing more attention on the risks of personal information held by Internet companies being turned over to outside sources, including the government.

Microsoft was & maybe still is hoping that businesses & the public would use their storage space for all your documents & data for a fee, do you trust them to keep it safe?

Again Kudos to google for not giving in to government pressure.
this may be a dumb question, but would the tool be about the equivalent of yousendit.com? or would it be something totally different? i don't quite mind having the files i send through yousendit be stored for however long they keep it (only a week if i recall) but perhaps they're under less scrutiny than a giant like google.
I've already got one, it's called an external hardrive. I also have a mini one called a thumbdrive.
Google does a lot of good stuff but I dont use everything they make - ie, google desktop, google talk, etc etc.
I just used google to figure out how fast my sneakernet pipe with the external USB 2.0 HD (80GB)
wierdly enough it's 29.9999999MBps. Strange the number was so accurate. I just took 480Mbps in GB per minute, then divided 80 by the answer, multiplied it by 2 for when im transferring back to my other PC (assuming I walk over to it at the speed of light), and converted 80GB per that many minutes to mbps... HMMMM
One pc to another can be easily done through FTP, and other vast networks. Even lan.
