I am building my gf a new computer, and one of the things she wants to use it for is burning movies, with dvd santa. I am thinking of an Athlon 64 3200+. but she is probably want to do some multitasking while she is wating for DVD santa to convert the avi to the dvd format. she is probably not going to do a lot, chat on msn, email, lesten to mp3's, working of word diocuments, stuff like that. so would 512 mb be enough? or would it be better to go for 1 gig. or, would it be better to give her a hyperthreaded or dual core cpu for doing this? thanks!
You can never have enough ram and it is cheap enough where you might as well get something decent.
1 gig is very respectable, though hyperthreading and such is kind of latin to me

Ram is one of the cheapest, and most noticible upgrades/additions you can make. Even this cheapass old 950 celleron is running 512 of ram, and it has been a big help.
Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be.
I have a 3000+ with two sticks of 512MB RAM and I highly recomend that set up to take full advatage of your dual channel ram. (instead of one 1 gig stick) Most people do not do this. I can encode a video, run fileshare apps and surf the web with no problems.
Only thing is I now want two 1Gig sticks because I do some heavy shit on my PC so I gotta get two new sticks. When I ordered my ram, I ordered on stick of 1G 3200 Ram but they ran out and sent me, at a discount, two 512 sticks with heat shields. Nice ram but now when I upgrade which I did plan to do all along, I need to buy two sticks instead of one. So the moral is, if you plan to upgrade later to 2 gigs get one stick of 1GRAM, If not, go with two sticks of 512, which should be all you need. Want to buy some on the lo lo? J/K

If you have the cash a duel core amd is well worth it for multi tasking but as a standed go for 1 gig(2*512 will work better in duel channel on a amd mobo) make sure you buy the ram in a pack of two.
Rest in peace mother

You will always be with me.
Put 128 meg ram in there, just so she has to stay on the pc longer.. and you can do more important stuff, play video games, go movies and concerts.
Hey Mels I have a 3400+ with two sticks of 512 and want to do the same as you.Originally Posted by Mels_Smileys45

That is a good deal. Its gonna be awhile before I upgrade, maybe it will still be cheap or cheaper when I get the money to blow.

I'm all for the 1 gig of ram (in the form of two 512 sticks).

are you refering to her currect computer? she currently has a celeron 667 with 192 megs of ram, and onboard video. i tried putting in a video card for her, but i had a hard time getting one to work properly with her computer. not really sure why any of them failed to work correctly.Originally Posted by shawners
i am kinda starting to lean towards 1 gig now after you guys have talked me into it. diffinally dual chennel, should be more than she will ever use
u cnt have 192 it probiblt 256 displayed as 192,it goes in 64mb(128,256,512,1024 which is one gig) also i have currently a hp comp with 4 slots and im thinking of putting in 4 512,u tihnk the comp will handle it?

Oh yes you can. I ran 640 in my old PC. 128 + 2 256 sticks. Not the best set up but it worked just fine. becaue it wasn't DDR ram
128 + 64= 192

i dnt think they sell ram in 64 or 128 anymore, most hardware and software requirements r minimum at 128

*sigh* Makes me miss my old comp. That's what I get for doing things I know I shouldn't do (install more ram while sitting on the carpet).
I gave it to me Ma. The new board takes up to 3GB of RAM, actually has an agp n PCI-E slot, has crazy overclock settings in the cmos... though it's only an Athalon 1.7.
I got a P4 at 2.8... but it's a shitbox pc, no PCI-E, no AGP... only the 32Mb onboard video...
