Data recovery and backup failing HD

My friend has a failing hardrive (failure is imminent replace and backup data =error). anyway, i can see the files in it and i know it has alot of bad clusters.I tried just copying them from his drtive to mine i get the cyclic redundancy check error. im wondering if anyone knows the best steps to take fo get most of the data off effectively and what program to use buying it isnt a problem :icon_cycl thanks for your help.

I would run chkdsk /f on the drive more than once

    defrag it

Boot to the Winternals All n One and use XP to browse the volume, and copy data over to another drive.
