    bittorrent in dorm

    Hey guys,
I really feel bad posting this new when i'm sure there's an answer to it somewhere, but most of the posts I've read have confused me. I go to UW-Madison and am trying to use bittorrent for downloads but cannot seem to make it work. I installed the latest version of bittorrent, then tried to download different torrents from different sites, but cannot get any connection. It doesn't show any download speed at all, is there some way to get around this? I live in the dorms so I've heard that could be the cause of my problems. Thanks for the help.

Are you usinng the offical bitTorrent client? I suggest you try out a better client such as uTorrent or Azureus.
Maybe the file you're downloading has no seeders? Try downloading a random file that's on isohunt.com's top 10 and tell me if it dosent work. You could also try changing the port BitTorrent uses to a port higher than 10000.

Wrong, he is obviously behind a firewall. The only chance is that there is an open port on the firewall or perhaps a proxy running that will allow peer and tracker communication.

if you are on a campus there is probably a DC++ hub or a group using ftp servers, try hanging out with the computer science guys they might know who is running warez servers.

rename the torrent file before loading into something else.. Then open it in your client.. Or let the extension auto run your client, then change the clients port to 1720 and encrypt headers with Bit Comet, works for rodgers and shaw ISP with their bittorrent sniff programs.
Let us know, otherwise hit the books and become a person to create a dorm friendly napster service.

Thanks for the help guys, i'll try some of those things out. Iam using the official bittorrent so i'll try another one and see how that works, and i know there are plenty of seeds for it for sure. I am behind a firewall, but it's set to allow bittorrent, so i'm not sure if that could have anything to do with it. Fortunately i'm taking a compsci class this semester (damn engineering...) so hopefully someone in there will be able to help me out. I'll try renaming it too, thanks again for all the advice.

1720 does not work for shaw, only rogers, and even that I can't varafy.
