i'm stuck in automatic update limbo

im running xp,sp2(legit copy)and am having trouble with two automatic updates from microsoft.they will start to install, but about half way through i get the message that updates were unable to install.ive even tried installing them manually but the same thing happens.so now i cant get anymore updates because i can't get past these two updates.i know i could turn off automatic updates, but i really don't want to do that as i want the latest updates, plus as i said trying manually didn't work anyway.if it's any help, the two updates are:KB901017 and KB899587.can anyone help with this frustrating problem?many thanks

I know you said you didn't want to but...turn off the automatic updates. Do custom updates of only what you need. Turn off Norton and try it. I was having troubles with the same thing, Norton was causing it.

    trying manually didn't work anyway.
At which point did it stop working when you tried a manual install? For example, did it install halfway then freeze when it was trying to create a restore point?

I have just successfully downloaded and installed both updates you have mentioned. Did you download the correct update as there seems to be 3 viariants?

    (2000/NT, WinXP SP1+SP2 and the x64 edition).

Then I'm definitley with lil_amb and moneoa. Turning off your Internet security / virus protection / Norton should cure this.

Have you tried disabling system restore points?

    1. Click the Start button.
    2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    3. On the System Restore tab, check Turn off System Restore or Turn off System Restore on all drives.

    Hope this helps.

Does anyone know why this worked?I used to get this when I used W2k and Roxio Goback but I don't know what the exact deal is.I guess system restore tries to write to the disk and some of the updates interfere with the writing and cause a freeze. That's kind of vauge though.I hate having spotty knowledge.
