    Hi all,

I've heard some things about Edonkey.
Some say it's great and some even say it's the worst prog ever.

    ed2k

It is slow as compared to Kazaa but the content is great. OVernet (serverless ed2k) is going to take over edonkey.

GIve edonkey a shot, its worth trying.

eDonkey is the best p2p program I ever used. The content is great (take a look @ www.sharereactor.com). And it's anti-leech :D

The eDonkey project is currently "paused", but there's a really good eDonkey clone: eMule, check it out!

Yes, true but as opposed to WinMX in eDonkey you are on LOTS of queues at the same time and no one is going to kick you off once you start downloading from them...

Lately I haven't had any speed problems at all, I have download the full 2 cd iso of "No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy In HARM's Way" in less than 24 hours... and I only have a 512/128 cable subscription.

actually i think programs which are difficult to use are better than programs which are easy to use. easy to use programs can be accessed by any idiot, whereas something like mIRC which takes more of a learning curve tends only to be used by people who are serious about file sharing, and who therefore share better files.

the same goes for eDonkey, out of all the p2p apps its probably the fiddliest to use, having to download servers, and with all its connection problems etc. the net result of this is that the quality of file on edonkey is way higher than on something simple to use like kazaa.

i say lets keep edonkey difficult to use and keep out the stupid kids sharing fakes, viruses and less than 128kbs mp3.

That's kind of a stupid filisophy. That way you get very little users on the network, and downloading from it may take forever. That's the only problem with clients other than fasttrack: THEY DON'T HAVE ENOUGH USERS. This is pretty bad, because there are a lot of morons out there who do share good files, but they don't know there are other progs apart from kazaa. So when kazaa dies... The fun is over. Hopefully someone tell's the idiots there are other p2p clients.

maartendc, I don't think eDonkey2000 has too few users at all. Currently I'm downloading a file from over 200 people (granted, most of queue) and the file only has an availability of 1 (lowest).

why is it stupid philosophy? the idea is simple. a small network of conscientious, dedicated filesharers is better than a large network of people sharing junk. i never said a network HAD to be small to be any good, i was simply drawing attention to the paradoxical situation that very small networks which are difficult to use have better files than big simple to use networks.

and where does this attitude that a download is only any good if its downloading at half the speed of light come from. Sure everyone would prefer a fast download to a slow one, but quite honestly i dont think its that important. I dont mind waiting an extra day or even a week for a file if it means a significant improvement in quality. some people are just too impatient.

besides i think almost all networks have easily enough users, its just that at least half of them dont share, and most of the rest share very little or nothing but junk.

No, I don't think the main advantage of large networks is fast downloads, but a large amount of files. On fasttrack you can get every divx movie you want, every mp3 you want etc. I miss that in other networks. But it is true that people share a lot of crap through kazaa.

    edonkey

    edonkey is absolutely excellent.
If you need help just ask.
it gives you quality and is not as simple as some apps. but don't let that disuade you.

    Peace!

Edonkey, along with DC, IRC and Newsgroups are the best place for downloading. They all have a steep learning curve, but it's worth it if you want quality.

Yesterday I started to love the eDonkey network... Though I am using eMule, a much better client - open source & quite easy to handle...

Yeah, you're not going to get your files as immediately as with KaZaA, but the overall content variety is far superior. If you don't mind waiting 1-2 days for your downloads to finish, go for eMule.

Overnet looks promising, but you need the Microsoft .NET Framework for it... one heavy bitch, i can tell you. No, thanks.
