Barracuda HDD Wins ‘Best Design of the Year’

Note - I want one, I want one right now.

Seagate Technology announced that its Barracuda 7200.9 500GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive has won the “Best Design of the Year” award from Electronic Design Magazine, a leading publication for electronic design engineers and managers. The magazine praised the Barracuda 7200.9 family as “the latest generation of the world’s most popular desktop PC hard drive” for pushing the limits of longitudinal magnetic recording to 160GB per platter and the half-terabyte drive in particular for a 16MB cache, fast 3Gbit/second SATA throughput and other performance-enhancing capabilities that make it perfect for gamers and power users. Electronic Design also applauded Barracuda 7200.9 for “an ultra-quiet 7200-rpm motor and a rugged g-force shock-protection system
    to keep data safe.”

Seagate’s Barracuda 7200.9 3Gbit/second SATA disc drive family delivers the high capacity, performance and reliability for systems such as media, gaming, high-end workstations and consumer PCs. Barracuda 7200.9 also meets the high throughput requirements for multi- user systems such as low-cost and SATA servers for small offices.

The Barracuda 7200.9 family stores up to 160GB on a single disc, the industry’s highest data density, and, like all other Seagate internal hard drives, is backed by Seagate’s industry-leading 5-year limited warranty. The 7200-rpm drives are available in SATA and Ultra ATA interfaces and capacities starting at 80GB.

“Barracuda 7200.9 is a very impressive piece of work, combining the highest capacity available in a desktop PC hard drive, 3Gbit/second Serial ATA performance with the industry’s only third-generation Serial ATA Native Command Queuing technology and the quietest operation we’ve found,” said Bill Wong, Electronic Design’s embedded systems/software technology editor.

Seagate is the worldwide leader in the design, manufacturing and marketing of hard disc drives, providing products for a wide-range of Enterprise, Desktop, Mobile Computing, and Consumer Electronics applications. Seagate’s business model leverages technology leadership and world-class manufacturing to deliver industry-leading innovation and quality to its global customers, and to be the low cost producer in all markets in which it participates.

Screw the 500GB version... The 160GB version with one platter is better.
