    walk the line

went to see this the other night with a friend, fully expecting not to like it, and was pleasantly surprised. i'm not a country music fan, so i wasn't sure what to expect. joaquin phoenix and reese witherspoon were both great. phoenix did a good job portraying the addiction (and being a method actor, i hear he did the same in real life). i've never much liked reese witherspoon, but she was good in this movie. buy the large popcorn, as it runs a little long.

I watched the crappy cam version that was missing the beginning and end.Luckily I have been a Johnny Cash fan since I was old enough to hear my parents records so I knew a lot more about the story than was presented in the movie.I was prepared to hate Joaquin Phoenix but he was pretty good.I had only seen him in the whiny little prick role in Gladiator and was pleasantly surprised.Definitely worth a watch ona decent copy.
As a matter of fact a supposedly better copy came out this afternoon but I haven't seen it.

my mom was a big johnny cash fan, can remember the folsom prison album playing on the 8-track in the car when i was a kid. did you ever hear cash's version of nin's "hurt"? he took that song and made it his own. the video was eerie, as it was made after june died and shortly before he did.

I'm not a big fan of music videos, but that one really got to me. It was very well done and definately captured a certain mood that the song alone couldn't (although I really do like the song as well).

the last movie i'd seen with phoenix that i liked was quills (another underrated gem, btw). wasn't much for gladiator or the village. but this one restored my faith. ahhh, i'd watch him read the phone book for an hour.

it just seemed like a song that summed up a lot of his past. knew it had to be good when even hubby was blown away (he tends to be cynical and hard to impress).

my mistake- june was still alive for the video, too. it must have been made not long before she was gone.

Johnny Cash is the man (in black)! probably my favorite country singer ever.

As for Phoenix, my younger brother told me it was almost as if he was channeling Johnny Cash; I might even go see it in the theatre!

I really like "I Hung My Head" from the same album that Hurt is on.

you won't be disappointed. it only chronicles his life to the folsom prison recording, but it's well worth seeing. haven't heard that track, may have to give it a listen. he also had a song on the dawn of the dead remake- "the man comes around". fits right in with the tone of the movie.

lol. funny. this thread inspired me, I'm listening to it as well!

The album itself is full of good songs and covers, Danny Boy, Desperado, In my Life, Streets of Laredo, Personal Jesus (one of the few, if not the only, songs on the album I don't care for), Bridge over troubled water and so on...

Its a good album. Every Cash fan should have it! Also check out the song "September When It Comes" by Rosanne Cash. you want to talk goosebumps? The morning I found ou johnny cash died the first thing I saw upon opening my eyes was Rosanne and Johnny Cash singing this song. I ain't afraid to say it- it didn't just give me goosebumps, it made me cry.
