    Canada becomes film piracy target

Ninety percent of illegal DVDs being sold are the result of a camcorder recording straight off a cinema screen, Serge Corriveau of the Canadian Motion Picture Distribution Association told Variety.

He said 40 percent to 50 percent of the camcorded DVDs are made in Montreal. Because movies are released in French and English in Montreal, it gives pirates a leg up on the European market, Corriveau said.

While the duplication is done in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver have become major players in the bootleg black market.

    assholes lol I love it

Good luck trying to do anything now, no matter who is in office we don't have an effective government.
We have better things to worry about then some copyright bullshit protectionisim form the media moguls.

Of course this means almost ANY legislation is bound to fail but hey.....unless some super cool group comes out of nowhere to bring fresh air to our Federal Gov, it will always be fucked.

( I will move if Stephen Harper is PM)

Move where? I hate him too, but look at the alternatives. I hate politics...especially canadian. New proposed gun laws for example. I have owned my hand gun since 1978 and I'll be damned if I'll give it up for any fucking price.

In the case of a handgun ban the liberals are trying to be all hip with the urbanites but seeing as we are 80%
rural country it would be political suicide to go and actually do it.

Prepare to hear alot of crazy promises, like cutting the GST.
Chritien already fed us that shit with a spoon and here we are 12 years later.

As for better places I am thinking a nice cabin in the remote mountains would be pretty nice
The rest of the world is too fucked.....

I agree with a lot of what you're saying Moneoa, but I don't know where you got the estimate about the population being 80% rural. It's exactly the opposite.

Personally I don't care if they take away handguns as long as they expedite those holders' purchase of rifles. You're not going to hunt with a handgun and a rifle is just as effective for home protection.

Actually I do care about the confiscation of handguns on principle. When the gun registry was started the promise was that there will be no confiscation of firearms.

Promise the world for a vote but once they get there they all do what ever the hell they want.
Thats the only benefit of being slapped around with a minority is sometime they will realise to keep going they will need to compromise and get their shit straight or else nobody will be able to do a damn thing.

In a way its funny because it means all these monopolistic assholes form the US wont be able to sell their shit here unless more than one party reaches a compromise....maybe the Conservatives and the PQ but I don't think people will elect the conservatives because of fear of the seperatists

though this is the world of surprises no?

I truly fear a conservative government under Harper, as I have a feeling he would be our version of G W Bush.

Registry is always a first step toward inevitable confiscation..............funny thing is the guys you dont want to have them, ie the criminals, never follow the rules anyway, th only ones who register are those that play by the rules.............

It cant, wont, and has not worked. I know that a govenment groping for power will use any possible knee jerk reaction to try and gain, or hold on to power. It has nothing to do with crime, but the vote buying of those that live in cities.

when I spoke to hunter privately about handguns awhile back I had entirely forgotten that, while most canadians have a rifle or two, its almost impossible to get a handgun there.

This confuses me. Down here in florida you can own pretty much whatever you want except ballistic knives (banned everywhere) and shotguns with barrels that are under...18" barrel length. I may be wrong about 18", the point is that you are allowed short barreled shotguns here but not "sawed off" shotguns.

    Automatic knives? legal.
    Automatic weapons? legal.

Theres definetely something to be said for Canada's low(er) murder rate but this extreme contrast confuses me. A handgun in the hands of a law abiding citizen is no different than a rifle in the hands of a law abiding citizen. And just as a rifle can do the same home defense duty that a handgun does, it can also accomplish the same criminal end as a handgun... the restriction of handguns there just makes no sense to me.

What if you are going for a hike in the Northwest Territories or the Yukon with no intention of hunting but, nevertheless, with a desire for some form of defense and protection? There are literally dozens of handguns that are designed for, and do, this particulary job very well. makes no sense to gorphon, and I feel like babbling.

On another note, I think that the Canadian MPDA got their numbers mixed up. Or do they mean that 40-50% of the pirated films IN CANADA are taped in Montreal?

I'd say that pretty accurately mirrors my own fears.
    --

I've ate a lot of game in my life and none of it was killed with a pistol.

I live in probably the worst neighborhood in my city (certainly the highest crime), my city is the most violent in the country per capita, and I don't need a pistol. Admittedly my frame of mind might change once I age more but nobody here lives in fear. There are no random murders in the area. It's all gang/pimp/dealer/strawberry related and even those are situations people put themselves into.

In addition, the last thing I would need while crawling through some window is a pistol on the other side of it. :hi

    Canadian politics

Let's be blunt... Martin's a liar and Harper's a creep. Layton has no charisma to speak of.
Is Duceppe the only one who's worth a damn?
I live in Ontario, but was born in Montreal. If I were still living there I'd vote for the Bloc.
As far as prohibiting handguns... I'm not giving up mine.
Ban handguns... It'll just be easier to buy them illegally.
No matter how you look at it... all of the parties in the upcoming election are looking for new and inventive ways to screw us.
That secluded cabin in the woods is sounding better and better.
