On behalf of the Xbox Linux Team (http://xbox-linux.sf.net), I am proud to announce that at 10:45BST the 'v1.1' secure version of the Xbox was proven to be running arbitrary BIOS code in a normal 256KByte modchip - with no additional hardware required. In short, in under a week we were able to normalize the new box to enable it to interoperate with Linux properly.

It seems that the Xecuter modchip people (http://www.x-ecuter.com) beat us to the punch by one day, and we are grateful for some hints they seem to have given us at the very end. But we fundamentally each got there on our own.

Work will now continue to integrate the new code into the Xbox Linux booting ROM.

Thanks to everyone who contributed their ideas and worked on the crack, both in Xbox Linux and on XBOXHACKER, we who are about to run Linux salute you!

Another great article wessman! Bill Gates will probably wet his Pull-Ups when he hears the news (if he already hasn't).

the x box is a good system, in our house we have all three, PS2, X-Box, and GameCube, and to say the least, the other two don't have much over the x-box.

Alot of people have to get over that gut-reaction they have to microsoft, and immediatly saying its shit, or worthless or something and take a look at the system and see that it han hold its own in the world of gaming consoles

if i could get my hands on a mod chip a little more easily, (and w/o the govt knowing ofcourse), i would buy a xbox no questions asked. its a $200 computer, and a decent one at that. 700+mhz, geforce 3, and a 8 gig hdd. go out and buy a new 120gig hdd and you'd have yourself a decent pc...

Hmm..I wonder if it used standard IDE... Anyone know of anyone who's successfully upgraded their X-Box hard drive?

    Talking I'd...

never buy an X box.....even the PS2 has it's own version of Linux....haven't picked it up yet but it seems pretty wild.

Rather spend my cash on parts and build my own cheap system that blows it away...
