Thanks for everyones help in the other thread i made! My friend loves his Philips and now im thinking about buying one for my mom as i download alot of documentary material from the web. What is my best bet for under $100?? Im very cheap but im thinking the philip has some sort of voltage glitch as i stated earlier there's a voltage mod people are using. Now circuit city online has em cheap for like 50 after rebates. Yet im not good with electrics so im thinking something else!
I have a Philips DVP642. It plays just about anything. With the exception of Quicktime and WMV. There are no voltage problems, it works great right out of the box. I got it at K-Mart for about $70.
Well that's what i had my friend buy. Maybe philips upgraded that voltage problem??? Maybe what i'll do tommorow is track down the threads where it details the issue and post them here with the workaround. It's a nice looking player the philips slim build=== many bitched about the quality of the build in the earlier production runs but from what i saw yesterday it appears to be AOK. They certainly fixed the red light power button annoyance as movies are playing HOWEVER THAT DAMN RED LIGHT IS STILL THERE!
here's the workaround: for the red pilot light use a scripto cd labeling pen and darken then the light appears as purple!
Look it up on pricescan.com as what type of player you need. Now days you can burn a bios disk and update the firmware. Most dvd players will be under 70 and have the functions of SVCD, mp3, avi,mpeg, vcd, divx, as well as dvd+r-r-rw+rw

The best DVD players in the world seem to be British. ie Arcam and Meridian. Not blowing my trumpet, but it's the technicalitys of the DVD players we're putting out at the moment.
Cambridge Audio, seem to have cornered the entry level market without a doubt. Absolutely.
Custom built electronics and a audio and video that is above any 'budget' player from Philips, Toshiba ect ect.
They are also making some very tasty recorders as well.
Above all, budget prices.

Well you really shouldnt buy any dvd player thats this expensive.. FOr the reason other dvd's are gonna come out and they wont be able to play.. and then the studios will start releasing the films on there.
Firstly, I took into account his $100 budget.
Secondly, I recall seeing a Cambridge Audio DVD55 for $150.
If he's got a dealer near by, bargain with the shop assistant, there's an obvious chance he's going to be walking out of the shop with it. Even if it's 20$ more than his initial $100. Fine, if he can't come up with that little bit extra, pitty.
On the issue of Coby, Apex, Presidian, Aspire Digital, the research I did on them (in conjunction with Krell's coments on ''research, comparison/ananylis''), they seem to come up on 'supermarket brand' radar.
Clearly, if he spends that $50 more, he's got a player that stands out from any budget player. Obviously. And being able to have it for a budget price as well. Like I said... if he's got a local dealer, try and get it for less than the original price. That being, $150.
Im in no rush gentleman! A cheapskate i truly am so i'll take a look around and see about this cambridge unit.
